Children from a local primary school have reached the finals of the British Dodgeball National Schools Championship.
Holt Primary School’s Year 6 dodgeball team will compete in the finals in Kettering on 3rd July after beating other primary schools in the South West finals at the University of the West of England in Bristol earlier this month.
“We are all really excited,” said headteacher Jo Hodge. “We initially sent 15 Year 6s in total and all 15 of them took part in the Wiltshire round of the competition that the Dodgeball Association run. We put in two teams and they all got the chance to play.
“One of the two teams qualified for the regional finals and they played teams from all over the South West. It was our primary school and another from Marlborough that got through.”
Jo said dodgeball has been part of the curriculum for a few years and is a popular, inclusive and accessible sport.
She said, “You don’t need much to be able to play dodgeball; you just need a school hall and some soft balls. The children pick it up really quickly.”
All 15 children involved in the competition will travel to Kettering to either play or support their teammates, along with parents and staff.
“We are so proud of them and the children are really excited,” she said. “We will definitely be getting a McDonald’s on the way home.”
