  • Melksham firm to supply more respirators to Europe

A defence company based in Melksham has secured a multi-million-pound contract to supply protective equipment to a European Ministry of Defence.

Avon Protection, which operates from Hampton Park, has been awarded an order worth around $20.6 million to supply military gas masks and filters through a NATO procurement programme.

The order will see the company provide FM50 respirators and filters designed to protect personnel against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, in line with NATO standards.

The latest deal takes the total value of Avon Protection’s FM50 contracts through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency to more than $100 million since 2020.

  • Air ambulance charity called to 45 incidents in Melksham last year

The local air ambulance charity was called to 45 incidents in Melksham over the past year, as crews continued to deliver lifesaving care across the town.

From its airbase in Semington, the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance’s helicopter and critical care cars responded to emergencies where rapid medical intervention was needed, bringing advanced care directly to patients at the scene.

Across the wider Wiltshire and Bath region, the charity attended 1,159 missions in total last year, averaging around three call-outs every day.

The helicopter is able to reach anywhere in Wiltshire and Bath within just 11 minutes, helping crews provide critical treatment when time is crucial.

  • Walking netball club gear up for busy and social year

Melksham’s walking netball team is gearing up for busy year of tournaments and games.

The club has entered two teams into the All England Netball South West Festival at Bath University Training Village on 1st February, which gives players the chance to compete and meet new people.

Organiser Sue Mortimer said, “Melksham Walking Netball is into its third year of playing at the Campus. We have been going for several years, having played at places such as Christie Miller, River Mead Primary School and even the Canberra Club, which kindly accommodated us when we had nowhere else to go.

“We have social events throughout the year, such as rounders in the King George V Park and a skittles night.

“Walking netball is so much more than keeping fit. Just to hear one person say they absolutely love playing walking netball really makes my day.”

A Girls’ football team in Melksham is flourishing after contributions from local sponsors enabled the team to purchase new kit and equipment.

  • Shining a light on Light Fantastic

Melksham company Light Fantastic is best known locally for bringing the town’s Christmas lights to life, but the business also works on a wide range of other events throughout the year.

From its Melksham workshop, Paul Weymouth and his team prepare lighting, sound and power equipment for weddings, parties, small venues, corporate functions, charity nights and school events. “We try to make every space feel a bit more special,” Paul said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a village hall or a marquee – the aim is to give it warmth and atmosphere. Our motto is ‘finding a way it can happen, rather than a reason it can’t.’”

The workshop is busy year-round, with lighting units tested, cables checked and coiled, and speakers stacked and labelled for upcoming jobs. Paul describes it as “practical, a bit magical and designed to make ideas come to life.”

While the Christmas lights and other large public events attract attention, much of Light Fantastic’s work happens quietly behind the scenes. Paul said, “A lot of our jobs won’t make headlines, but they matter hugely to the people organising them. We match the right equipment and solutions to each job, no matter the size.”

  • Hundreds of Wiltshire Council services to go up in price

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

From weddings and burials to pest control and late fees at the library, hundreds of services offered by Wiltshire Council will cost more from April.

In an unusual show of cross-party consensus, Wiltshire councillors voted unanimously on Wednesday 7th January to increase the price of hundreds of services it offers to the public.

Most will be going up by the Consumer Price Index – meaning an increase of around 3.8 or 3.9 per cent. But there are exceptions.

The cost of getting married in an approved venue will rise from £630 to £675 – an increase of 7.1 per cent – if you want to get married on a Thursday or Friday. Tying the knot on a Saturday will go up from £685 to £725 – an increase of 5.8 per cent.

That’s just for the legal services provided by the council and doesn’t include the cost of venue hire at council-owned venues, which varies from town to town.

  • Community transport service helps hundreds of residents

Volunteers at Melksham and District Link supported 530 residents last year, providing transport to medical appointments across the region.

The charity’s figures show its 46 volunteer drivers covered 73,722 miles and made 2,607 journeys, taking 530 clients to 107 destinations. Trips ranged from local surgeries and community hospitals to district hospitals in Bath and Swindon, with a few journeys further afield to Bristol and Oxford.

Chairperson Liz Rowley said district hospitals accounted for over half of all drives for the first time, up 13% on 2024, while trips to community hospitals increased by 47%. “We pride ourselves on operating solely on client donations,” she said. “We do not receive funding or grants, and their generosity allows the scheme to continue making a difference in Melksham.”

Melksham Link offers transport to anyone without other means of getting to appointments. Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles, are reimbursed for mileage, and stay with clients before returning them home.
