LIVE music from The Raindrops, playing rock n roll hits from 1950s to present day, is on at the The Conservative Club on Saturday 17th December.

Everyone is invited with non-members welcome with entry at £5 per person. The music starts at 8.30pm.

  • Plans to turn Avonside office blocks into homes By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison Plans to convert offices into flats at Avonside have been lodged. Moonraker (Melksham) Ltd wants to turn the upper floors of office blocks at Avonside Business Park into residential units. The enterprise park is on the site of the former Unigate dairy, which operated between 1905 and 1969. Office blocks and light industrial units were constructed in the mid 1980s. Moonraker started buy- ing buildings at the enterprise park in 2019 and completed the takeover of the facility in 2022. In its application, the firm says it has “…worked with occupiers, undergone significant marketing and invested in improving the buildings and spaces on site. “This has included re-decoration of external buildings’ facades, improved maintenance and alterations to commercial spaces to best suit existing and prospective new tenant occupiers at the site.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Melksham residents set to run London Marathon Residents from Melksham will take on the London Marathon this month, running 26 miles for various charities. Jen Ferris and James Taylor are among the residents preparing to run in the event on 26th April. Jen is running for the charity Breast Cancer Now. Both she and her mum have had breast cancer. She is aiming to raise a minimum of £5,000 and break a Guinness World Record for the fastest time a woman who has had a double mastectomy due to cancer has run a marathon. Jen said, “Breast cancer has had a real impact on me and I wanted to turn that experience into something positive for others to show there is also hope and life after aggressive treatment.” James Taylor is running to raise funds for Mercy Ships UK, a faith-based international development organisation that deploys hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, delivering vital free healthcare to people in desperate need. James said, “This journey is also deeply personal. I want my children to see firsthand what dedication, perseverance and purpose can achieve and to be proud of the effort behind every mile.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Creative bonnets mark Easter at local primary school Children at a Melksham primary school showed off their creative talents recently at the annual Easter Bonnet Parade. Pupils at Forest and Sandridge Primary School designed and made Easter bonnets to wear in a parade in front of friends, parents and carers. Deputy Headteacher James Mead said, “It was a wonderful moment of community, confidence and creativity. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to our fantastic Parent Teacher Association, the Forest Friends, who generously donated an Easter egg for every child in the school and nursery. Their kindness helped make the day feel even more special for our pupils. “A brilliant end to the spring term and a lovely way to welcome Easter.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio
  • Melksham marks Red Nose Day The community has raised funds as part of this year’s Red Nose Day with non-school uniform days and various fun events. The initiative raised funds for Comic Relief, which supports causes in the UK and around the world. Students at Melksham Oak Community School raised £344 with a non-school uniform day, a cake sale and a treasure hunt. They also held a Year 7 fun run on the field and a beat the goalie competition. Bowerhill Primary School held a ‘crazy clothes day’, and pupils at The Manor CE Primary School and Little Lights Nursery wore red clothing for the day. Local resident Sue Mortimer ran the Melksham parkrun dressed as a clown, raising £184. She said, “I would like to thank friends and family, people from the Cons Club and Liberal Club for helping me raise £184. Thank you to fellow parkrunners and parkrun volunteers who turn up every week to make our Saturday mornings special.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • Car park opens at Shurnhold Fields A new car park is now open at Shurnhold Fields, with work to install flood prevention measures also complete. The mini country park-style public open space, located off Dunch Lane, includes seating areas, a World War I memorial wood, an orchard of Wiltshire heritage fruit trees and public rights of way connecting the site. The site is jointly owned by Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council, both of which contributed to the car park scheme. The fields are supported by the volunteer group, the Friends of Shurnhold Fields A flood prevention bund has been installed along the boundary of the site, as part of a wider scheme led by Wiltshire Council and supported by Environment Agency funding. The measures are designed to reduce the risk of surface water flooding to neighbouring properties on Dunch Lane. Residents previously raised concerns over the car park plans, arguing that it could lead to increased anti-social behaviour, litter, loud parties and more traffic in the area.   • Free sports sessions return for girls Free sports sessions for secondary school–aged girls are returning following the success of last year’s pilot. The sessions will run every Thursday in term time from 16th April at Wiltshire Youth Canoe Club in King George V Park, from 5pm to 6pm. The US Girls sessions, run by Wiltshire Council, provide free, relaxed sessions designed specifically for girls.   • Petition launched to save fortnightly bin collections By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison A petition to save fortnightly bin collections in Wiltshire has been launched. Earlier this month, a cross-party group of Calne-based Conservative and Reform UK county and town councillors launched the county-wide Say No to 3-Weekly Bins campaign. The campaign opposes Wiltshire Council’s plans to reduce the collection of residual household waste from once a fortnight to once every three weeks from 2027. At the same time, waste contractors will begin weekly food waste collections and soft plastics recycling which, argues the council, will reduce the amount of refuse in residual rubbish bins.   • Residents call for town centre toilets to reopen Concerns have been raised about the lack of public toilets in the town centre, with residents calling for the Church Street facilities to be reopened. They say current provision at the Market Place and Bath Road is ‘not enough’, particularly for the growing elderly population and those with medical conditions. The Church Street toilets were closed by Wiltshire Council in 2016, who say that Melksham Town Council is responsible for toilet provision in the town. Speaking at a recent town council Amenities and Facilities meeting, resident Sue Mortimer said, “Residents are asking when the Church Street toilets are going to be reopened. Well-maintained toilets are beneficial for trade and economy at any town. It encourages visitors to stay longer and also to come in the first place.” Speaking to Melksham News, one resident said, “There is a distinct lack of decent toilets in the town. It is quite a long walk to the campus, especially if you are elderly like me and my husband.   • Carnival royalty selected at annual community day This year’s carnival royalty has been chosen ahead of the much-loved event in July. The selection day was held on Sunday 22nd March at the Assembly Hall and included the return of the Carnival Cake-Off and Carnival Cuddlies competition. Melksham’s new carnival royal family are: Queen Victoria, Princess Betsy N, Butterfly Princess Morgan, Fairy Princess Betsy L and Prince Josh. The chosen royalty will represent the town at community and carnival-related events. The carnival committee said, “The competition was tough, especially in the older princess and prince categories and we are very pleased that it was down to the judges to choose and not us as we wouldn’t have been able to decide.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
