A peculiar occupation in Guernsey

The Royal British Legion, Seend Branch Annual Lecture is being held on Saturday 21st April. This will be given by Mrs Jean Parsons, and is entitled ‘A Peculiar Occupation in Guernsey.’

It will be held in the community centre at 7.30pm and will include a light supper. Tickets £10 (including supper) only in advance from Jenny Phillips (01380 828822) or Seend Post Office (01380 828250). There will be a raffle in aid of Royal British Legion funds.

All are welcome, you do not have to be a member of the Royal British Legion to attend.

  • Former Labour Club site for sale A plot of development land in the centre of Melksham is due to go to auction next month. The 0.32-acre site, at 3 Lowbourne, was formerly the site of the Melksham Labour Club, which was demolished and cleared with vehicular and pedestrian access. The site has already been granted planning permission for two schemes to develop either nine three-bed houses or 17 two-bed flats. The site has a guide price of £695,000. The agents, Hollis Morgan, say that given the town centre location and having its own pedestrian access from Bank Street, the site also offers scope for a wide range of potential commercial uses, subject to consents.   • ‘Outstanding’ primary school gets highest grading in Ofsted inspection Local primary school, Forest and Sandridge, is celebrating after being rated Outstanding in all five areas assessed in its latest Ofsted inspection, marking a significant achievement for staff and pupils. The school received the highest possible grading across all five areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. Inspectors, who visited the school last month, said the school “is a happy and welcoming place where pupils flourish. The school’s meaningful values of compassion, respect, courage, and humility nurture pupils and enable them to thrive. Pupils truly value their school and the education they receive.” Headteacher Scott James said, “This outstanding outcome belongs to everyone. It is a reflection of the shared values that define Forest and Sandridge Primary School and our belief that every child deserves the very best to enable them to flourish.   • Canal link project at risk if new Berryfield houses approved The community has raised concerns that the Melksham Canal Link project could be at risk if a proposal to develop 68 houses on land north of Berryfield Lane is approved. The Melksham Canal Link project, which has received widespread support since its proposal in 2006, is being run by the Wiltshire & Berks Canal Trust. The scheme aims to create a new route for the Wilts & Berks Canal through Melksham, connecting the Kennet and Avon Canal to the town centre, with a canal line running from Semington via Berryfield to the River Avon. However, The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust says that, if approved by Wiltshire Council, the proposed housing development would be on land earmarked for the canal, threatening the future of the project.   • Vegan market comes to Melksham this Saturday A vegan market will be taking place in Melksham this weekend. Held in the Market Place on Saturday 15th March, the event will feature 20 confirmed traders offering a range of vegan-friendly goods, including pizza, hot dogs, quiche, hot sauces, clothing, skincare, candles, jewellery and more. Buskers will be playing the saxophone and singing to add to the fun atmosphere, alongside children’s activities. Organisers say, “The markets are a judgment-free zone, and everyone is welcome. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, flexitarian, or just curious, everyone is welcome to come along and support independent businesses.” Entry is free, and the event runs from 10am to 3pm.   • Knitting club supports local charities for over a decade For over a decade, a dedicated group of knitters in Melksham has been using their skills to make a difference, crafting handmade items for hospitals, charities and those in need. Founded in March 2014 by local women Bev Viveash and Hilary McFall, the Crazy About Knitting Club has grown to around 60 members. They meet twice a month at Melksham Baptist Church to knit a variety of items, from blankets and baby clothes to poppies and teddies. Next month, the group will mark its 11th year. “We will try and knit anything that a charity or hospital would like,” explained Bev. “At the moment, we are knitting poppies for Melksham Town Council, lap blankets, bed jackets and teddies for both the Royal United Hospital in Bath and Southmead Hospital in Bristol.   • Residents campaign against controversial warehouse proposals Residents in Bowerhill have launched a campaign against the controversial plans for an ‘enormous’ warehouse development in the area. Local company, Gompels Healthcare Ltd, has submitted plans to build a warehouse and office space on 5.5 hectares of land south of the A365 Bath Road, west of Turnpike Garage. Gompels, which has operated in the town since 1967, says the development is vital to its future, following a six-year search for a suitable site. The company states the development would be “the town’s first major investment in 20 years, injecting £40m into the local economy, creating 275 new jobs, and safeguarding 600 more.” However, many local residents have objected to the plans, launching a campaign displaying ‘Stop Gompels Warehouse Here’ posters on their properties and calling for other sites to be considered for the development. The Tichborne Case The world was riveted over the story of Anastasia Romanov, the Grand Duchess of Russia, who, along with her family, was murdered in 1918. Rumours abounded that she had actually escaped, with pretenders claiming to have survived the execution to inherit the Romanov fortune.
