Aloeric Primary School is holding a Magical May Fair on Friday 19th May from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
The Friends of Aloeric Primary School say, “Themed around the Harry Potter books there will be lots to do and see. Ride Aloeric’s Hogwarts Express (Chuffy the Train) and glimpse our versions of Nagini, Aragog, Dementors etc., view and possibly participate in some experiments in Professor Snape’s Potion Laboratory (courtesy of the Oak School). Meet some real owls and reptiles at The Owlery (Speringfield Animal Sanctuary). Shop in Diagon Alley, buy wands and quills, play ghostly skittles, participate in Potion bottle tombola and shoot the dementor.
“There are lots of other stalls and games besides the normal favourites like bouncy slides and football and outside stalls. You can relax at the Leaky Cauldron Cafe and sample delicious cakes or enjoy a hot dog.
“We are holding a spellbinding raffle. Prizes include Longleat Center Parcs pass for 4 people, Butlins (Minehead) Family Day Pass, 2 tickets to a show at the Assembly Hall, 2 passes for a Spa Day (Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel) and many, many more very exciting prizes. Tickets are 20p each or a £1 per book and are on sale at the school, Melksham Beauty Clinic, Cobblers Bench and Sunflowers Preschool.

The Independent Chapel and Women’s Rights in the 1840s
A document I recently transcribed lists the baptisms performed at the Independent Chapel. This record is especially helpful in that, along with baptisms, a lot of them include birth dates - one of the ways I discover which day someone was born.
The following is taken from a Wiltshire Times article published on 9th November 1878 which reports a speech given during the 100-year services and to celebrate their renovations (what we now know to be the Rachel Fowler Centre).
One speaker, Rev. T. Mann, minister in Trowbridge, talked about the Chapel’s origins when he related how Rev. Honywill came to Melksham and how he’d gone on to remain as the minister for the Independent Chapel for almost 60 years. [Honywill and his family lived on King Street in what we now call “Legion House”.]
