A CYCLIST from Bowerhill took part in the Wiltshire ‘Big Wheel’ 100 Mile Ride last month raising £1,320 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Chris Tweedie set off bright and early on Sunday 25th September from Devizes along Wylye Valley to Wilton and then on to Salisbury. Then up the Avon Valley to the Vale of Pewsey, through Savernake Forest and on to Marlborough, before the final climb over the Ridgeway to the finish back in Devizes.
Chris said, “I’m amazed that Wiltshire Air Ambulance doesn’t get government funding – how vital it is and how many lives has it saved and will it save going forward is invaluable. So, knowing it costs £3.25 million per annum to keep the service going, motivated me to get training and do my bit to raise funds.
“The ride went well. It was fairly challenging and very hill in parts. I managed to get round in 5 hours 45 mins (riding time) although my official time was 6 hours 5 mins due to two punctures and stopping to replenish water and food supplies.
“The event was well organised between the charity and Bike Events. There was a 45 mile event for those who felt 100 miles was too far, and a 12 mile family event, so something for everyone. The whole day was fun and the Devizes Green area was where it started and finished, with lots going on for the whole day.
“I work for Old Mill Accountants and Financial Planners at Challeymead Business Park – we have adopted the Wiltshire Air Ambulance as our designated charity. I’d like to say thank you to Old Mill who have made a generous donation and given me time to raise further sponsorship.
“I would also like to thank Melksham Cycle Centre who sponsored me and supported me by checking my bike before the event. I would like to thank Mike Holt of Kibswell Homes (a residential property developer based in Corsham) and I would like to thank David Bush of David Bush Associates (business advisers) who also sponsored me, and to all my friends and work colleagues who made kind personal donations.
“I have raised £1,320 so far so I’m on track to hit my target of £1,500. I’m still taking donations at www.justgiving.com/Chris-Tweedie or you can donate directly to Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Having done the event for the first time I will certainly aim to do it again next year and would encourage anyone who likes a challenge to do the same. Thanks to Wiltshire Air Ambulance for a great day.”
