Members of Atworth WI participated in the Village Fete on Saturday 16th July by providing and serving cakes, tea, coffee and squash in the marquee that had been provided.
We were fortunate that we had a dry day and people seemed to enjoy themselves.
At our July meeting several members reported on the various events they had been to, organised by Wiltshire Federation. They ranged from a Smocking Rediscovered Workshop to a scientific introduction to Pee Power. One of our members had been on a short residential course on Earl English Church Music at Denman, a beautiful house in 17 acres of gardens near Oxford. You can choose from more than 500 day and residential courses and the WI Cookery School is based there too. Each year around 11,000 people enjoy the programme.
Our speaker was Mr Arnold Snowball who had kindly stepped in at the last moment to replace the advertised speaker who cancelled. He told us about past residents and owners of Great Chalfield Manor, with particular emphasis on the influence of women over the centuries. Arnold is a guide at the manor. He also mentioned the fact that the manor has been used as a location for various films and TV dramas, most recently for Wolf Hall and the forthcoming Poldark series.
Our August meeting on Monday 15th will be an Afternoon Cream Tea in the garden, weather permitting, of one of our members.
