AVON Bowls Club have announced that they are now open and ready to start the 2021 season.
The club’s publicity officer Richard Buckland said, “The club is now looking great and we are proud to announce that it is open and ready to start the 2021 season. For the time being, strict Covid-19 rules will still have to be observed.
“ To this end, the committee have kept everyone informed and up to date with the latest guidelines aimed at keeping us all as safe as possible.
“Avon Bowls Club offers excellent opportunities for everyone to enjoy the sport, it caters for ladies and men, young and old and is ready to welcome new members throughout the season.
“The Bowls Club is situated in the grounds of Melksham House, just off the Town Market Place. Access to the grounds is limited at the moment due to the construction of the Health and Wellbeing Centre. Access to the club can be gained on foot via a side entrance to the grounds, off Place Road.
“The return of sport and physical activity is vital to the fitness and mental health of the nation. We know that our sport has a big role to play in providing an opportunity for outdoor activities as the lockdown restrictions are relaxed.
“Dedicated hard work by the Avon Bowls Club committee during the pandemic has ensured that the club is able to keep members playing, albeit in accordance with strict limitations laid down by the Government. Throughout the non-playing winter months, they have kept close watch on the situation and its effect on how we will eventually be allowed to commence bowling activities this year.
“Fund raising has been an essential task which has kept them busy. They must be congratulated and thanked for their dedicated hard work and success in this respect, keeping us safely in the black. Finding enough cash in the club funds has been a real worry and challenge for them during this time.
“Our green keepers, Avon Sports Ground Maintenance Company, have been able to continue with their sterling work and deserve our sincere thanks, the green has never looked so good!
“During the 2020 somewhat restricted bowling season, the committee, together with County President John Crowder, generated a range of activities within the club. As a result, regular highly competitive games were played with some innovative ideas. To create a variation to ‘normal’ bowling, the introduction of the Australian rules style of playing went down particularly well and will probably feature in some games in the future. John will continue to hold the position of County President for 2021 and is looking forward to what we all hope will be a very busy year, with the restored interaction with other clubs, so greatly missed during 2020.
