Undaunted, despite recent unfortunate happenings, as reported in the last edition of the Melksham News, Avon Bowls Club’s opening match of the season took place on Saturday 11th April.
More than 50 members played a mixed friendly game, and in spite of a chilly wind blowing across the playing fields from the A350, everyone declared the occasion to be most enjoyable.
Refreshments in the form of a much appreciated hot soup, followed by dessert was provided by members of the committee, and those present welcomed being able to play outdoors after the recent cold winter.
Tuesday 14th April saw the first Roll-up evening of the year, well-attended not only by a large number of full members, but by several prospective new members who were warmly welcomed. The club hopes they will enjoy membership of such a friendly organisation, and look forward to them taking part both in the mixed friendly matches with other clubs, as well as attending the weekly Tuesday evening Roll-up.
The next main event will be the Open Evening to be held on Tuesday 12th May to which all prospective new members are invited. Beginning at 6.00pm (flat-soled shoes please – the club will provide other equipment) you will discover what Lawn Bowling is all about and why it is so popular throughout the civilised world!
To publicise this event the tourist information centre in Church Street will host a window display from Monday 27th April where there will be leaflets about the Open Evening. Meanwhile, further information is available on the club’s website and from the club secretary on abc- secretary@hotmail.co.uk.
Pauline Baker of Avon Bowls Club said, “Come and join us; you never know, you might learn that Bowls is not only just a ‘game for old men (and women!)’ and you might actually enjoy it. Everyone is welcome and the club looks forward to welcoming you.”
