A retired aircraft flight engineer, who built ‘The Great Bulkington Railway’ in his back garden, uses it to raise money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Nev Boulton’s hand-built locomotives will be open for adults and children to ride on bank holiday Sunday, 26th August.
Nev spent four years building the 1,000 feet of track and the 40-foot long tunnel in his back garden and a further two years to build the signalling system. He also built the three diesel (electric) locomotives himself over several years. The track was finally completed 30 years ago in 1988 and since then, 2,100 trains have carried visitors around the garden.
On Sunday 26th August, the railway is open to the public for train rides for adults and children of all ages from 1pm-4.30pm. Light refreshments will be served by the ladies of Christ Church in Bulkington Village Hall.
Fares are twice round the track for only £1 or buy a season ticket for £5 that will get you unlimited rides! All profits will go to Wiltshire Air Ambulance, with no expenses taken by the railway.
The track is located on the corner of Mill Lane in the village of Bulkington, (near Seend) next to the village hall, use SN10 1SW for your sat-navs. Toilets and shelter (if it rains) are available in the village hall.
The track can also be hired for the day for adult/children’s parties (bring your own food) with two hours of train rides for up to 20 children on the private miniature railway – all for £140 with money being donated to Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
