An introduction to tai chi and qi gong, Chinese martial arts practiced to improve health and well-being, is being held this month at Berryfield Village Hall by local practitioner Mary-Ann Pickett.
Known for its slow, intentional movements, tai chi is particularly popular as a form of gentle exercise with benefits to both mental and physical health. The qi gong element relates to the best breathing practice which is an integral part of tai chi.
“I have advertised the new sessions for ‘Healthy Ageing’ because it will be on a weekday morning and for many people approaching retirement is the perfect time to look for a new activity, learning a new useful skill,” said Mary-Ann.
“It builds confidence and it is fun to learn in a relaxed, stress-free environment.
“Who would benefit? Practicing tai chi will benefit people of all ages, it is for everyone, and being older is by no means a requirement. Anyway, the idea of when we consider ourselves ‘old’ is a constantly changing concept.
“Tai chi has to be experienced in order to get its many benefits. The reason tai chi is described as a mind/body system of exercise is the effect it has on all body systems.
“So during a practice: – On a physical level, all the body systems – skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous and lymphatic – get stimulated and energised.
– On a mental level, the stress response is decreased and the relaxation response increased bringing about healing and calm.
“It’s all about finding the right balance, in all areas, physically, emotionally and mentally and for some even spiritually.”
An introduction with a chance for you to put your questions to Mary-Ann will be held on Thursday 28th September at 10am at the new Berryfield Village Hall.
“There will be demonstrations of various elements of tai chi and also a chance for you to practice if you wish,” added Mary-Ann. “If you are interested but are not able to attend the introduction please get in touch.”
You may book your place by contacting Mary-Ann on jmaolsen@icloud.com or on 07711 871 750 The cost to attend the presentation is £5
