THE bells of St Michael’s Church, Canon Square, rang for local couple, Allen and Edna Gullis, to mark their 75th wedding anniversary this week.
When the couple got married at the church on 6th May 1944, the country was in the grip of World War II, and the ringing of church bells was not allowed as it may have been confused with the signal of an invasion.
After reading about Allen and Edna’s story in the last issue of Melksham News, bell ringers from St Michael’s Church contacted the couple to offer them a special anniversary celebration.
On the day of their anniversary this week, Allen and Edna attended the church for tea, a blessing from the vicar and a peal of bells in their honour.
Family and friends also hosted a party to remember at the Assembly Hall last week. Helping the couple celebrate were Melksham air cadets, Warminster Military Wives Choir and deputy mayor, cllr Jon Hubbard. BBC Points West also attended the event – broadcasting the celebrations on the early evening news on the day of Allen and Edna’s anniversary.
