WILTSHIRE Police are warning people to be more vigilant after a Melksham resident was conned out of £1,660 by a man offering to do work on the fascia of their bungalow.
Earlier this month, a resident of Craybourne Road, Melksham paid £1,660 in cash to a man who knocked on their door offering his services as a handyman. The man carried out some work on the victim’s bungalow for two days, before disappearing, leaving work undone and the victim out of pocket.
“We take doorstep crime very seriously, as it often targets the most vulnerable members of our communities,” said a representative of Wiltshire Police.
“Please remember to always keep your door shut and locked, and use a spy-hole or window to check who is outside.
“Do not open the door if you don’t recognise or are not expecting a caller, and avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home.
“Ask yourself, am I expecting a visit from a friend, neighbour or relative today? Has someone made an appointment by telephone or letter to see me today?
“If the answer to either of these questions is no, then do not open the door and think SOS – Stay Out Stranger.
“Please report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood via the non-emergency police number 101.”
