MELKSHAM in Bloom group came together to watch the screening of BBC’s ‘Britain in Bloom – Melksham’, on Wednesday 25th April, as part of a series that followed different towns on their journey in the competition last summer.
The episode, which aired on BBC Two, showed the journey of Melksham in Bloom as they strived towards their first gold award, being judged by experts from the Royal Horticultural Society.
It documented the frustrating period of development work on the Market Place, Melksham award-winning gardener Bruce Petty, and his scissor-trimmed lawn, and the flag-making workshops as the BBC followed the group of resilient volunteers around the town.
Vice-chairman of South West in Bloom Melksham, Linda De Santiz said, “Melksham Bloomers thoroughly enjoyed the episode of Britain in Bloom. After four separate days of filming in scorching heat, they put together an awesome programme, which was presented by Chris Bavin.
“A massive thanks to all those dedicated volunteers who were involved and put in masses of effort to make this happen.
“Time now to concentrate on this year, and new volunteers wishing to join this group are very welcome.”
The overall theme of social media responses was that of pride for the town and messages of congratulations sent to those involved.
Kay Wakeley wrote, “I watched it and thought it was great, a wonderful group of volunteers that make are town look beautiful, well done to all of you!”
Rachael Johnson wrote, “Moved to Melksham a month ago and found it a really useful insight into the town and of course its wonderful people.”
Sue Owen wrote, “You made me proud! The town always looks lovely in bloom but I loved the addition of the flags last year. It was interesting to see the town from different camera angles to how I usually see it – and to ‘meet’ the dedicated volunteers behind this labour of love. Thank you very much!”
More volunteers are needed to help prepare for this year’s judging, that will take place on 11th July.
