Bookings open for Melksham Christmas Fayre

BOOKINGS are now welcome for stalls at this year’s Melksham Christmas Fayre. 

The popular fayre is to take place on Saturday 6th December starting at 2.00pm until 5.00pm, when the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.

The fayre is held in the Assembly Hall and outside in the Market Place.  There will be entertainment during the afternoon and Father Christmas arrives at 2.00pm to see the children in his grotto.

Stalls are available for no cost, but organisers are asked for a donation to the Christmas Lights fund.

  • Melksham Times Past. Trees, parks and roads for the Silver Jubilee A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis Prior to King George V, British monarchs only celebrated jubilees after 50 years on the throne. In 1935, his Majesty was the first to celebrate a Silver Jubilee, marking his 25 years as monarch. Following with tradition of past jubilees, King George V commissioned trees to be planted in his honour, thus providing work to hundreds of people at a time when there was high unemployment and economic difficulties in Britain.   • Coming up at Monday Movies. The next Melksham Monday Movies will feature two hit films: My Old Lady, starring Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith, and A Boy Called Christmas, also starring the late Maggie Smith. My Old Lady tells the story of a down-and-out New Yorker named Mathias (Kevin Kline), who travels to Paris to liquidate a huge, valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father.   • Christmas wreaths and new member search for Townswomen’s Guild. Members of the Melksham Townswomen’s Guild got into the festive spirit this month by making Christmas wreaths, as they aim to recruit new members. The group’s chairman, Tricia Hoy, said, “One member was a bit concerned about managing tricky greenery onto a hoop, but no! Linda McCloud had prepared many strips of colourful material to knot around a wooden hoop, so no sore fingers – just beautiful finished wreaths ready to decorate our homes next month!” Tricia also highlighted that, due to low membership numbers, the group faces the possibility of closure. “We need to recruit new members to keep our group going,” she explained. “We meet on the second Friday of each month at 2pm and are a very friendly group.   • Local band to play event for emerging new talent. Local indie band The Sunnies will take part in a band night showcasing young musical talent, aiming to raise awareness of the struggles local bands face in securing gigs. The Sunnies will perform at the Young Bands Night, set to take place in Frome and organised by Frome-based band Butane Skies.   • Care home brings Munich to Melksham with Oktoberfest celebrations. A Melksham care home transformed its reception area into a lively Oktoberfest celebration last month, bringing together residents, their families and their friends for an “unforgettable” evening. Blenheim House, part of the Berkley Care Group, treated attendees to music, games and authentic German snacks in an event hosted by The Bierkeller Boys, a Bavarian oompah band. Alongside the music, the Oktoberfest celebration also included a variety of games, which residents and families enjoyed alongside traditional Munich beers, wines, and the classic German snacks of bratwurst and pretzels.   • Dark tales of Wiltshire and a mummified hand – what’s on at the Atworth History Group. At their last meeting, the Atworth History Group welcomed local historian Claire Mills, who gave an entertaining talk about the darker side of Wiltshire. The group heard about several haunted places and the stories of the people who were doing the haunting, as well as a mummified hand found in the haunch (a snug) of the Venison pub in Salisbury.   • Success in Rome for Melksham martial arts school. A local martial arts coach has been crowned European Champion following the European No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Rome, with other club members also winning medals. Members from Gracie Barra jiu-jitsu school in Melksham competed in Rome last month, with brown belt Nick ‘The Hammer’ Hams securing victory and earning the title of European Champion, building on his silver medal performance from the previous year. The school owner, Professor Antonio Bustorff, also earned a bronze medal at the championships after a hard-fought battle with the reigning world champion, ‘Yakuza BJJ.’ Chris Collins, a 52-year-old purple belt, won a gold medal in his division, adding to the club’s medal tally.   • Festive charity cards and gifts now available at the TIC. Charity Christmas cards, festive gifts and stocking fillers are now on sale at the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Church Street. In addition to Christmas cards and stamps, the centre has a range of seasonal items including Advent calendars, candles, wrapping paper, gift tags and gift bags. “There are also Melksham Christmas cards, hand-painted by a local artist, which you might like to send to that special friend or family member,” said a spokesperson for the TIC. “New this Christmas are Melksham candles by Kat Bujak of Floral Flames, along with eco-friendly bunting and gift tags from Eco Bunting. The centre also has books available, including The Sesquicentennial of Forest and Sandridge CE Primary School—a great stocking filler—as well as Around Melksham in Old Photographs, Melksham’s War and Melksham Remembers World War 1 Exhibition books.” Original artwork by Richard Bill is also available, along with prints from the centre’s resident card makers.   • Older residents urged to check eligibility for Pension Credit. Older residents are being urged to check if they are eligible to claim Pension Credit following the government’s decision to stop the £300 winter fuel payment for some pensioners, with millions set to lose out. Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with your living costs if you are over state pension age and on a low income. This year, the winter fuel payment is £200 for those on certain benefits and born between 23rd September, 1944 and 22nd September 1958. Read more on our website. The link is in our Bio.
