MEMBERS of the local group Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG) have donated homegrown English oak trees to the Canal and River Trust to replace trees recently vandalised by Caen Hill Locks.
In early June, around 100 trees in the Diamond Jubilee Woodland by Caen Hill Locks in Devizes were vandalised and sprayed with a type of weedkiller.
BRAG member Jenny Butcher said, “After reading about the wanton vandalism in the Diamond Jubilee Woodland my husband Graham and I decided to donate 16 native English oaks to the Canal & River Trust.”
“All were raised from tiny acorns, which we collected on our walks in this area and planted ourselves many years ago, and were now ready to be planted in a woodland area.
“As active volunteers of BRAG, we have had experience of vandalism to the BRAG Picnic Area next to the Kennet & Avon Canal, so we know how upsetting this can be.
“We contacted the Canal & River Trust and were pleased to hand over these oaks to help replace some of the trees that were damaged.”
