The Melksham Twinning Association (MDFTA) started in 1980, forging a relationship between Avon in France and Melksham. Twinning was started after the Second World War to repair relationships between France, Germany and England.
“We aim to visit Avon every other year and in the intervening years, we host our French friends,” said Pam Wiltshire. “Whilst they are here in Melksham, we organise events and entertainment for them and they do the same for us when we are in France.
“Avon is a pretty commuter town just 35 miles South of Paris. It is next to the River Seine and the charming market town of Fontainebleau. There is something for everyone from quaint shops and places to eat to the picturesque chateau with its extensive grounds and fountains.
“Throughout the year we hold fundraising events to help cover the costs of entertaining our French friends.
“Twinning offers everyone in the Melksham area the opportunity to learn to speak French at our free weekly conversation classes and the chance to make lasting friendships. Our programme of social activities, events and outings means there is always something to do and our newsletter ensures you won’t miss out on anything!
“We are always looking for new members to join us; as well as individuals, couples or families, we welcome groups such as cyclists, musical or art groups, who might want to exchange with similar groups in Avon. Members are welcome from Melksham and the surrounding villages.
