Although no major honours or league titles came Broughton Gifford Bowls Club’s way this year, it has been a more than satisfactory season.
The club reports, “The men, competing in the Wilts 3 Rink League and the Mid Wilts Triples League against much bigger clubs such as Chippenham Town and Royal Wootton Bassett, acquitted themselves well. For a small club like BG to hold its own in this company is a credit to all those taking part. The final league placings were a respectful 7th and 6th respectively.
“The club did well in defeating three teams to reach the Tourist Trophy semi- final against Salisbury. As the match was tied, an extra end was required to decide the winner. Much to BG’s disappointment, Salisbury scored one shot to clinch the game
“The ladies, who compete in the Nor-West League, surprised many by finishing third in the table, just missing out on promotion when their nearest rival won their last game of the season. BG finished on level points, but lost out on shot difference.
“The club also played 20 mixed friendly games. These matches are an ideal introduction to the game for newcomers when enjoyment and fun matter more than winning. BG were pleased to welcome five new members during the season and all progressed to play regular league bowls before the season’s end.
“The club’s “in house” competitions were keenly contested with the honours as follows.
“Men’s Four Wood Winner: Dave Alford, Runner-up; Ray Thomas. Open Singles Winner: Pete Rigby, Runner-up; Barrie Freeman
“Ladies’ Four Wood Winner: Carol Rigby, Runner-up; Sue Davies. Ladies’ Two Wood Winner: Sue Davies, Runner-up; Margery Mand-ryko Men’s Pairs Winners: Kevin Holmes & Ray Thomas, Runners-up; Barrie Freeman & Nic Paris
“Ladies’ Pairs Winners: Heather Davis & Margery Mandryko, Runners-up, Sue Davies & Gwenda Kelley. Mixed Pairs Winners: Kevin Holmes & Gwenda Kelley, Runners-up; Margaret & Rodney Bourne
“Club Triples Winners: Margaret Cooke, John Stewart & Graham Whitfield. The Bell Cup Winners: Margaret Bourne, Garth Topp & Gwenda Kelley. Bert Simpson Shield Winners: Richard Brooks, Margaret Cooke & Pete Rigby.”
