ONCE again, the village of Broughton Gifford will host its annual BG Games on Saturday 20th August and it’s set to be bigger than ever!
Organiser Christopher Fielden said, “Couldn’t afford the ticket to Rio? Afraid of the Zika virus? Unable to maintain your training regime? Here is your chance to view and participate in the alternative Olympics – the BG Games.
“Now in its fifth year, this summer’s games will be the biggest yet with more events, more venues and over two hundred medals to be won. Last year, the youngest medal winner was just three years-old and the oldest was over eighty. Luck plays as large a part as skill in many of the events!
“The day will begin at 9.30am with a parade from the Parish Church along The Street to The Common with an Olympic torch, where the sports will begin at 10am.
“With welly-whanging, frisbee throwing, babyfoot, the paper-plate discus, putting the cabbage, a do agility competition, penalty shoot-out and, for the first time, a scooter dash for school children. (Please come fully protected!)
From 10.30am, the Bowls Club will be open for precision bowling; again a newcomer to the Games.
“Our sponsors, the Rioja wine company Marqués de Cáceres, is offering a case of wine to the winning team in both the men’s and women’s tug-of-war competition. (In the children’s event the prize will probably have to be wine gums!) We are hoping to attract teams of eight from all the pubs and clubs in the neighbourhood. “Whilst all this is going on, The Bell on the Common will be hosting a range of pub games including darts, speed pool, giant jenga and boules, and in their garden there will be a barbecue to refortify all for the afternoon’s events.
“These begin at 1.30pm in the Village Hall with skittles and new-age Kurling, followed by children’s sports in the Old Manor paddock at 3pm and further traditional pub games, such as mackerel juggling, yard-of-ale, and golf chipping in The Fox from 4.30pm onwards. The medals ceremony will see us all returning to the Village Hall at 6.30pm.
“To complete the day there will be live music in the evening at The Bell on the Common. Please come along to participate, or just to watch others making fools of themselves. This is a great day for the whole family.”
