MELKSHAM Adventure Centre is looking for new committee members to help support and grow the popular centre.
“We are always on the lookout for more committee members to join our small, friendly team so don’t be shy,” said one of the committee members, Amanda Slade.
“You are very welcome to come along to our AGM and meet the current committee and see how we support and grow the Adventure Centre. Think how far we could take the building with more members! The AGM is being held on Wednesday 1st March at the Adventure Centre in the King George V Park at 8.00pm.
“A brief history of the Adventure Centre for those of you who have wondered what is the white building in the park by the river.” added Amanda. “It was built and founded in 1977 by Ivan Petty, Ronald Merchant, James Herbert and Maurice Birchell. Originally it was built as a centre to provide sporting and social activities for all young people. Its main mission statement was to benefit the community as a whole and, in particular, young people. This still holds true today.
“In 2002, the canoeing section grew to become Wiltshire (Youth) Canoe Club who still use the downstairs of the building.
“Today’s users include the canoe club, boxer-cise, keep fit classes, first aid courses, equine podiatry, canoe sport coaching, a tennis club, training camps and a Saturday morning café with many associations with the local community including Parkrun and Junior Parkrun and the Food and River Festival.
“The facilities include a main hall, gym and large space, a training / conference room with projector, meeting style tables, a TV, a fully fitted kitchen and toilets. “Future plans include new roller doors on the river frontage and new side access from the park.”
