WITH Remembrance Sunday fast approaching, Melksham’s Royal British Legion is looking for volunteers who can lend a hand with this year’s Poppy Appeal.
They are searching for volunteers to assist with collections at local supermarkets which will raise crucial funds for veterans and their families.
In the run-up to Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 12th this year, the Legion are hoping to have tables in Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl and Aldi stores, from Monday 30th October until Saturday 11th November, subject to the number of volunteers available.
“The more volunteers who come forward, the more collections we will be able to organise and the more money we can raise,” said Melksham Poppy Appeal organiser, Trevor Patterson. “Helping for just a few hours would help us enormously. The funds collected from poppy sales and donations offer a lifeline to veterans, service personnel, and their families and, with the thanks from the community, it can also be an incredibly rewarding experience.”
If anyone would like to volunteer to help at the tables in the stores, three hours in the mornings or three hours in the afternoons, please contact Trevor at trevorpaterson747@hotmail.com or ring 01225 899001, mobile 07884 050097.
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, during the period of Remembrance. Last year’s Poppy Appeal in Melksham raised over £24,000.
“We are always looking for new members for the local RBL,” added Trevor. “We meet at the Foresters Arms pub and restaurant on the second last Tuesday of the month at 7pm.”
