A CARE home worker is raising funds and awareness for Dementia by walking 1million steps.
Chris Guest, who is the community relations manager at Blenheim House Care Home, has so far raised £340 for the charity, Alzheimer’s Society.
His challenge originally started last year with a target of 850,000 steps, but he had to pause the fundraiser because of arthritis in one of his ankles, which developed as a result of a previous wakeboarding accident. Now resumed, his upped the challenge to 1million steps.
At Blenheim House, Chris works with families who seek care for their relatives and regularly advises them on dementia related topics such as how to interact and engage as signs of the disease set in. He says, “Supporting families, whose loved one has dementia, is really rewarding, I get calls on a daily basis from families who are struggling to care for their mum or dad, many are upset or hurt that this has happened to them.
“I can chat about what options there are for them and they really appreciate that, it’s important to remember that dementia does not mean the end of the road for their relative – they can still live a happy and fulfilled life with the right support around them.
“Hopefully this campaign will highlight that people like me and the Alzheimer’s Society are out there to help, advise and comfort those in need.”
