The Melksham Carnival team raised funds towards this year’s procession recently by providing pre-ordered goodie boxes to families at two local primary schools.
The boxes included fresh scones, cream, jam, tea and strawberries and were distributed on the last day of term at Aloeric Primary School and Bowerhill Primary School.
In total, the scheme raised £170 towards this year’s carnival procession, which is taking place on Saturday 5th July.
Chair of Melksham Carnival Michelle Brightwell said, “It was a rocky start to the day when last-minute illness meant I was left to sell the cream tea boxes at two locations — at the same time — on opposite ends of town.
“However, the headteacher of Bowerhill Primary School, Chris Light, allowed me to attend both their sports day events last Friday, where I was able to meet lots of parents and organise the collection of the pre-ordered boxes before heading to Aloeric Primary School to continue selling with the help of members of Melksham Carnival Royalty and their families.
“We want to thank The Vintage Teacup for baking the scones and packing them all up beautifully, as well as Asda for donating ingredients and Coombe Castle for the cream, which allowed us to sell around 30 boxes to families in Melksham while raising around £170 towards Melksham Carnival.”
Entries are still open for this year’s carnival, and residents and local groups are encouraged to showcase their creative talents. Michelle said, “We would love to see some variety showcasing the talents Melksham holds. Decorated buggies, wheelchairs and wheelbarrows are all welcome — dig out your World Book Day costumes, show us your medals you’ve earned as part of a team. We are proud of you and think you should show off your creativity and achievements.
“We will also be looking for sponsorship and volunteers on the day, so if anyone is willing to help, please follow our Facebook page for more details.”
