Charity bingo night in aid of PHAB

WILTSHIRE and Swindon PHAB are hosting a charity bingo evening on Friday 12th October to raise committee funds. 

The Physically Disable and Able Bodied charity are running the charity bingo on at The Devizes Wyvern Club,  starting at 7.30pm. 

The event is in aid of Wiltshire & Swindon PHAB area committee and will be used to the benefit of Phab in Wiltshire, including the club situated in Melksham.

  • Small rise in crime at Melksham Station New data has revealed the number of crimes reported at train stations across the UK, showing a small increase in the already low figures reported at Melksham Station. Melksham Station, which has services to Westbury and Swindon, has seen a slight rise in its already low crime figures. There were four crime reports to the British Transport Police (BTP) between 2024-2025 compared to one crime reported in the 2023-2024 period. This means the rate of all crime incidents per 100,000 passengers has increased from 3.3 to 13.18, although authorities say it is important to view this rise in a wider context. The BTP emphasised that “every offence is one too many” in relation to the new statistics. A BTP spokesperson said, “The chance of becoming a victim of crime on the railway remains extremely low, and reports of high harm crime such as robbery and violence remain low at 2.2 incidents per million passenger journeys. It is important to not sensationalise these statistics and view them within their context. For example, at Westbury station, which has around 270,000 passengers per year, there were 23 reported incidents last year.” Read more on our website. The link is in our Bio.
  • News From The Clubs Atworth History Group The Atworth History Group welcomed Phil McMullen, who gave a very interesting talk about the history of letterpress printing on Monday 3rd March. As well as telling us about the early use of letterpress printing, Phil showed us some of the tools of the trade and a couple of things that he had printed. Next month, on Monday 7th April, Dave Ecob from the Moulton Trust in Bradford-on-Avon will give a talk about Alex Moulton and the work of the Moulton Trust. We meet in Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome at the modest cost of £5 for the evening, or you may wish to join for an annual subscription of £20. The Atworth museum has been closed for the winter and will reopen on Sunday 30th March, from 2pm to 4pm.   • 4.5% council tax rise approved in “cattle market” council meeting By Local Democracy Reporter Jessica Moriarty Wiltshire Council’s budget plans for 2025 - 26 have been approved by the full council, with a net general fund budget of £527.420m. The meeting lasted over seven hours and saw party leaders clash amid what was described as a “cattle market” atmosphere ahead of May’s local elections. Both proposed amendments to the Conservative budget failed to pass the vote, which means that residents should see a 4.5 per cent rise in the Wiltshire Council element of council tax. This rise is lower than previous years, something which the leader of Wiltshire Council, Cllr Richard Clewer, said has been achieved through focusing “relentlessly on prevention” and the “integrity to take difficult decisions.” He praised a “hugely successful last four years” for Wiltshire Council, whilst his cabinet listed achievements such as high ratings for adult social care, SEND, and children’s services, reductions in fly-tipping and further investments in highways. However, some members argued that the lower rise in council tax was linked to upcoming elections. Speaking at the meeting on Tuesday 25th February, the leader of the Liberal Democrats on Wiltshire Council, Cllr Ian Thorn, claimed the administration was “tired” and “out of ideas.” Read more on our website.   • Local resident urges government to provide path to settlement for Ukrainians living in the UK A local resident has signed a petition urging the UK government to provide a path to settlement for Ukrainian refugees currently living in the country. The petition, which has gained significant support with 34,902 signatures, calls for the government to offer Ukrainian refugees a route to permanent settlement in the UK, following their arrival after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Graham Ellis, a Melksham Town Councillor, is one of the petition’s supporters and was also a host for a Ukrainian family who arrived in Melksham. He said, “We have a quarter of a million guests from Ukraine in the UK at present and these individuals face significant uncertainty about their future. We think allowing them to settle would provide the stability needed to rebuild their lives and contribute to British society.” The Home Office has stated that, to date, the UK has offered sanctuary to over 300,000 Ukrainians and their families under one of three Ukraine schemes: the Ukraine Family Scheme, the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme.   • TV’s Paul Martin values rare finds at busy Melksham event Local antique expert and TV presenter Paul Martin recently hosted another free valuation day, where 50 residents brought a range of items, including a gold Fabergé fob watch and a 1910 Edwardian croquet set. The free event, held last month at ‘that meeting space’ in the Market Place, was another success for the BBC presenter, best known for hosting Flog It! “It was an incredibly busy day; I think this is the busiest we’ve had yet,” said John Firth, administrator of ‘that meeting space’. Paul, who lives in Beanacre, began his career as an antiques dealer 25 years ago with a shop on London’s Portobello Road. “Then, I shared shops and did lots of fairs,” he explained. “I’ve had several shops throughout my life and career, including one in Marlborough, and that’s when the BBC found me 30-odd years ago. I still had my shop for the first three years of doing Flog It!” Now a familiar face on shows such as Antiques Road Trip and Countryfile Diaries, Paul enjoys meeting the public at his valuation events. “I love TV—I’ve done over 2,000 shows for the BBC.   • Local children enjoy new Awdry Avenue play park at grand reopening The community gathered on a sunny Saturday for the grand reopening of Awdry Avenue play park, where local children had the chance to try out the new equipment. The park reopened on Saturday 1st March, following a refurbishment that introduced a range of new features for children to enjoy, including a climbing wall, a basket swing and a slide. Key representatives from the town were in attendance, including Melksham’s Mayor Tom Price and Deputy Mayor Saffi Rabey, to officially open the new park. The refurbishment was funded by UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Community Conversations initiative, which provides funding for local projects. Mayor Tom Price said, “It was an absolute pleasure to be able to attend the opening of Awdry Avenue Park. This was a sorely needed upgrade to the Forest community after the previous park had outlived its lifespan. I want to express my thanks to Bridey from Community Conversations for all her support in making this park a reality.   • Enforcement notice issued over unauthorised occupation at Semington mobile home park Following complaints about an unauthorised increase in occupation on Greenacres Mobile Park in Semington, Wiltshire Council has issued an Enforcement Notice on the park’s owner. The site has planning permission for 14 pitches, which constitutes 28 mobile homes for Travellers. However, the council has identified a significant increase in the number of mobile homes on the site, with up to 77 being stored on site. Many of these are also allegedly being rented on the open market to people who aren’t classed as Travellers for planning purposes. Following a formal investigation, the council has now served an Enforcement Notice on the site’s owner to require the number of mobile homes on the site to be reduced, in line with the existing planning permission. The notice was served on 26th February and will take effect on 2nd April. It recognises that different site occupants have different needs and so staggers the times that the occupiers and mobile homes are required to leave the site over the next 18 months.   • Local gaming shop relocates to Chippenham A local gaming and pop-culture collectibles shop has closed its doors and relocated to Chippenham due to a rise in running costs. The Toy Moon, which had been based on Bank Street for the last five years, sells a range of collectible products, including items from Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Nintendo and Warhammer. The shop also ran various Lego clubs and Pokémon events, which will continue at their Chippenham site. The shop closed in Melksham on 28th February and held a grand opening in Chippenham on Friday 7th March. The owners explained that they relocated because their five-year lease came to an end, and with the rent rising and a low footfall during the week, it became a ‘struggle’ to keep the shop running in Melksham.   • New community park opens in Melksham A new community park has opened in the heart of Melksham, transforming an unused field behind The Canberra Youth Centre on Spa Road into a green space for the whole community to enjoy. Residents gathered on Saturday 1st March for the opening of The Canberra Centre Community Park, which includes accessible pathways, a community orchard, an edible hedge, a mini arboretum and a sensory garden. The project was a collaboration between 4Youth (South West) and Spurgeons Children’s Charity, both of which use the Canberra Centre. One of the most unique features of the park is its diverse range of trees. “To help visitors appreciate these beautiful trees, a special information noticeboard is planned for installation once funding is secured,” explained Jon Hubbard, chair of 4Youth. The park also includes a community orchard, which in a few years will offer free fresh fruit to visitors, and edible hedges that will produce a variety of fruits for community use.
