Charity dance tips memorial fund over £16,000

THE family of a local woman recently presented a cheque to Dorothy House Hospice Care, after holding a charity dance at Spencer Sport and Social Club earlier this year. 

Alan Newbury has been raising money in memory of his sister, Carol Hynes, since she died in 2005. A dance on 26th September raised £3,727, pushing the family’s fundraising total past £16,000.

Alan said, “I’m chuffed to bits that the fundraising has gone so well. When Carol was ill in Dorothy House I said I’d raise the money, and I’m absolutely over the moon to have passed £15,000.

“This will be the last dance I organise because it’s hard work and begging makes me very uncomfortable, but I will definitely continue to raise money in other ways for as long as I can.

“Dorothy House is a great cause; when Carol was here the staff were amazing both with her and the family, and none of us know when we or our loved ones will need their help. I’d like to thank everyone who came along to the fundraisers, my wife Sandra, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Rob, John O’Toole, Mark at Spencer Sport and Social Club, and Erica Chamberlain.”

Dorothy House’s Tulip Fund administrator Julia Barratt, accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity.

Julia said, “This is a fantastic amount to have raised and the donation means a lot to Dorothy House. I think it’s a lovely way to remember Carol.”

The September dance was the third organised by Alan; one in 2006 raised over £6,000, and one in 2011 which raised over £3,000.

Alan has also raised money by taking part in the Bath Men’s Walk, and regularly hosting raffles and bingo nights at the Old Lane pub in Chippenham.
