A Melksham mum has launched a fundraising campaign to support children with cancer after her eight-year-old daughter was diagnosed with a rare form of the disease.
Clare Beck started the campaign after her daughter, Gracie-Jianne, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in October.
“After months of stomach aches and numerous doctor visits, we finally got the diagnosis in October that she had a tumour in her stomach,” said Clare. “Since then, she has endured major surgery, multiple scans, and chemotherapy, leaving her feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Gracie has shown incredible strength, but she misses her friends and the joys of childhood.”
Determined to turn their experience into something positive, Clare is aiming to raise £2,000 for children’s cancer charities and the Rainbow Trust, which provides emotional and practical support to families of children with life-limiting illnesses.
She is also hoping to organise a special event to bring Gracie-Jianne’s friends and other families facing similar challenges together, after her daughter wished for a day with loved ones.
“We are aiming to raise the funds and then decide which charities to donate to. We will also be donating to the Rainbow Trust,” said Clare.
“I also want to create a day where children can just be children again—where they can bounce on a bouncy castle and enjoy themselves. Gracie-Jianne never asks for anything, but she did say she wanted a party with her friends.”
Gracie-Jianne’s classmates at Lacock Primary School have been a source of comfort and support, helping her cope with the changes caused by her treatment.
“No matter what we have done as adults, the children have gone above and beyond; they have been marvellous,” said Clare.
“They made her cards, sent messages, and when she was feeling really low about losing her hair, they normalised it and never made a big deal out of it. They’ve stood by the car to wave at her, called her, and done everything they can to make her feel included. These are eight- and nine-year-olds.”
Clare is urging people to support the fundraiser to help bring joy to Gracie-Jianne and other children going through similar experiences.
“Support would mean the world to us and help bring some joy to Gracie and her friends during this difficult time. Thank you for considering helping us make Gracie’s wish come true.”
