The Christmas countdown in Melksham starts this weekend with the eagerly awaited Christmas lights switch-on and festive fayre.
Taking place on Saturday 7th December, the event will mark the switching on of the town’s impressive Christmas display, organised and installed by the Melksham Christmas Lights Group and Light Fantastic.
Attendees can enjoy live music, local market stalls, an outdoor bar, hot food and drinks, fairground rides, photos with Olaf from Frozen, and mulled wine.
The Christmas market will open from 2pm with local stalls, followed by performances from the Bell’s Angels Morris Dancers, 4Stars Dance, Jessica Self, Melksham Music and Drama, Melksham School of Dance, Stagecoach, Melksham Rock Choir and Female of the Species.
A special Santa’s Grotto will also be available from 2pm to 5.30pm in ‘that meeting space,’ giving children the chance to meet Santa and his elves and attend a special story-time session with Santa and Mrs Claus. Tickets cost £3 per child, with one accompanying adult admitted free, and all proceeds will go to the mayor’s chosen charity, Julia’s House.
The lights will then be switched on at 6pm with a show-stopping firework display by Distant Thunder Fireworks.
Cllr Tom Price, Mayor of Melksham, said, “I warmly invite everyone to come to Melksham’s Christmas lights switch-on event. This event continues to grow in popularity thanks to the dedication of the Melksham Christmas Lights Group and the town council. Join us and enjoy the celebrations!”
The town council’s Memory Tree will also return this year, offering people the opportunity to leave a dedication to loved ones. Written messages can be handed in at the town hall, or tags can be collected from there to write messages on. Alternatively, submissions can be made via a QR code, which is featured in this edition of Melksham News.
