Christmas Market and shopping trips

THE community bus will be running trips to local Christmas Markets and shopping centres in the coming weeks.

The first is on Saturday 29th October to Cardiff,  with a huge range of shops and places to eat. Then Saturday 12th November to Gloucester and the Quays, with designer shops as well as the cathedral to visit.

The next is Saturday 26th to Salisbury to the Christmas Market, and on Saturday 3rd December the bus visits Abergavenny to visit the popular Christmas food market. Then finally, Saturday 10th December a trip to a Christmas Market in Winchester.

  • Revitalise your Autumn with Qi Gong: New course starting in Melksham. This autumn, Melksham residents have a unique opportunity to explore the ancient practice of Qi Gong with a new course designed to boost well-being and energy levels. The course, led by local Tai Chi and Qi Gong teacher Mary-Ann Pickett, will take place at the Riverside Centre and is for both experienced practitioners and complete beginners. “Qi Gong is a gentle form of martial art which focuses on breath control and energy flow - unlike more widely recognised martial arts such as karate, taekwondo or judo - often seen in films and now in the Olympics,” said Mary-Ann. “While Tai Chi might conjure images of groups of seniors moving gracefully in unison in parks, Qi Gong is more elusive to the Western eye, as it involves the mastery of breath, known as ‘Qi’ (pronounced ‘chi’), and gentle, controlled movements. ‘Gong’ refers to the skill acquired through steady practice. Together, Qi Gong is about harnessing and directing the life energy that flows within us all, improving both physical and mental well-being. “Qi Gong is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.   • Care home hosts Bridgerton bash for charity. A care home in Melksham hosted a Bridgerton-themed high tea event in support of Huntington’s Disease Association, raising £240 through family donations. Blenheim House hosted over 100 residents, families and friends for the event which was held in the home’s gardens. Guests enjoyed a selection of food prepared by the in-house catering team, including smoked salmon sandwiches, fondant fancies, macaroons, and classic scones with Dorset clotted cream and strawberry jam.   • Anti-social hotspot patrols. Sadly, the summer is coming to an end, with a little more rain than a lot of us would like! For us, we have had a successful summer with the introduction of government-funded anti-social behaviour (ASB) hotspot patrol initiatives. This funding has allowed us to put additional resources into patrolling the top ASB areas in our town. As a result, looking at what the public tells us during our consultations, crime reports and monthly statistics, we have not seen the usual ASB flare-ups we commonly do over the summer months. The Berryfield Village Hall committee is looking for volunteers to help with the running of the hall. “We welcome volunteers to help with opening the hall for some bookings and organising our moveable partition,” says Shona Holt, chair of Berryfield Village Hall Trust. “Our weekly rota is variable and no fixed commitment is required.” Anyone one interested and any residents of Berryfield are invited to attend the Berryfield Village Hall AGM on Wednesday 4th September at 7pm. Complimentary tea and coffee will be available.   • New critical care car for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. A new critical care car has been unveiled by Wiltshire Air Ambulance, partly funded by a grant from the HELP Appeal. The Volvo XC90 has arrived at the airbase in Semington and is ready to take the charity’s critical care paramedics to emergencies across Wiltshire. The new Volvo replaces the older model, which was involved in an accident in March while en route to an incident.   • Canal volunteers delighted by success of open day. An open day on a local stretch of the Wilts & Berks Canal has raised much-needed funds to support its restoration. The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust hosted the event at Pewsham Locks, north of Lacock, on Saturday 10thAugust. The day included a pop-up café and tours of the worksite, together with boat rides along the stretch which has already been rebuilt.   • Melksham Slimming World members run to support cancer charity. Slimming World members in Melksham raised nearly £1,400 for Cancer Research UK by taking part in Bath’s Race for Life last month. Nine members and friends walked, jogged and ran the race to raise money for the charity and remember friends and family members affected by cancer. “In January the team started to train for the event by attending the Melksham parkrun in King George V Park at 9am every Saturday to ensure that the 5km distance of the Race for Life was a comfortable achievement,” said Kathy, the Slimming World consultant at The Guide Hut in Melksham. “Through snow, rain and sun they have attended to give them the confidence and improved weight losses for the event. The team contained four members who have already achieved their target weights and in total the team have so far lost over 18 stone. “Supporting cancer research has helped many members who have either been directly affected by cancer themselves or been affected by friends and family members having cancer. “Coming together as a team has motivated us all to raise money and enjoy the exercise together.   • Is 16 too young to vote?. In the recent general election, the Labour Party proposed a policy to lower the voting age to 16, an ongoing debate in the country discussing if we should allow more of the UK to be active in the policies and future of the country. The idea to lower the voting age is not new to Labour; it was successfully lowered from 21 to 18 in 1969 by the Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson with the aim to represent the country more fairly. Following similarly, newly elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has led the party since 2020, supports lowering the voting age further to 16.   • Free skating and scooting events hailed ‘huge success’ THE free skating and scooting days that took place this month have been hailed as a ‘huge success’ by Melksham Town Council, which partnered with ATBShop Skate Warehouse and the Wiltshire Council FUEL Programme team to put on the event. Around 65 people attended across both dates, which ran on 8th and 22nd August, to take part in the free skating and scooting events led by ATBShop. A free lunch was provided on both days by the FUEL team. The ATBShop team also had a free scooter to give away and Melksham resident Jack Williams was the proud recipient of new ‘Blunt’ scooter, which was presented to him by Melksham Town Mayor, Councillor Tom Price. ATB still has one free scooter to give away and everyone who entered at one of their Wiltshire-based events over the summer will be included in the draw.
