Civic Awards shine a spotlight on ‘community-minded’ champions

Individuals and groups in Melksham who have made a significant contribution to the community over the past year were honoured with Civic Awards at the Mayor’s Reception, held on Friday 22nd March at Melksham Assembly Hall. Representatives were welcomed by the Mayor of Melksham, cllr Simon Crundell.

The Melksham Civic Awards were presented by Melksham’s mayoress, Rose Hoskins, who presented 16 awards across four categories: the Achievement Award, the Community Award, the Enhancing Melksham Award and the Mayor’s Cadets Award.

The winners of  the Achievement Award are: Lexi Czerwionka, a coach from Melksham Town Lionesses Under 10s football club; and Jayne Green and the team at Melksham School of Ballet, Tap & Modern Dance.

Winners of the Community Award are: Beth Dark, for work with Melksham Carnival and as a volunteer for the Melksham Lions Club; Melksham Christmas Lights; local residents, David and Caroline Williams; Laura Smith from HELP Counselling Service; Melksham Lions Club; Louisa Lewis, from Melksham Free Dining; Melksham and District Link; Melksham News; local resident, Terri Welch; and Wendy Clayton from Alzheimer’s Support.

Winners of the Enhancing Melksham Award are: Jack’s Kitchen; and Joe McCann from Melksham News.

Winners of the Mayor’s Cadets Award are: Army sergeant Shannon Bullock; and Air Cadet Taya Blackett.

Town Mayor councillor Simon Crundell said, “Congratulations to all the Civic Award winners of 2023/24. They truly display the best of Melksham, and we are lucky to have such community-oriented individuals and organisations among us. I would like to thank all the staff and volunteers involved for their dedication in organising this wonderful event. I am especially grateful to Sara Land, the mayor’s secretary, who managed the organisation, and to the Air Cadets, who volunteered their time to ensure the smooth running of the event.”

Achievement Awards

Two Achievement Awards were given; Lexi Czerwionka was recognised for her success coaching the Melksham Town Lionesses under 10s football club. Lexi, along with the coaches, helps create a safe and friendly environment for the girls to grow their confidence and improve their skills. Lexi also organised for the girls to do a sponsored walk to raise funds for Dorothy House.

Jayne Green and the team at Melksham School of Dance were recognised for their Christmas Showcase in December, which included various forms of dance such as tap, ballet, and modern. The showcase included a range of ages from three to 60 years old and Jayne created an inclusive and joy-filled event that captivated audiences.

Community Awards

A total of 10 community awards were given: Beth Dark was recognised for her 10 years of service with Melksham Carnival as well as volunteering in Melksham Lions Club; Melksham Christmas Lights were awarded for their dazzling festive displays every year around the town; and David and Caroline Williams were awarded for their involvement with Melksham Rugby Club, working in the bar and organising mini rugby for children, as well as helping children and parents in the nature reserve, educating along the way, and volunteering at Melksham Community Larder.

Laura Smith was recognised for her work around mental health within the HELP Counselling Service; the Melksham Lions Club was recognised for the support they give to the local community and charities through volunteer work and fundraising events.

Louisa Lewis was awarded for her work within Melksham Free Dining; Melksham and District Link were awarded for the support volunteers give to over 900 clients in Melksham and the parishes, taking them to and from their doctor appointments.

Melksham News was recognised for informing and entertaining residents as the town’s only local newspaper; Terri Welch, a stalwart of at least 30 years, was awarded for her work raising funds for the Adventure Centre, volunteering at parkrun and organising the Melksham Monday Movies club.

Wendy Clayton was recognised for her work with Alzheimer’s Support.

Enhancing Melksham Award

Two awards were given to members of the community who have helped to ‘enhance’ the town. Jack’s Kitchen was awarded for enhancing King George V Park (KGV) and increasing visitor numbers to the park.

Melksham News’ operations manager, Joe McCann, was awarded for his work in working with local councillors to advance projects, including installing lights in King George V Park.

 Mayor’s Cadets Awards

Army sergeant Shannon Bullock was recognised for her ‘outstanding year’ where she has attended every community event; Air Cadet Taya Blackett was also recognised for being a member of the squadron for nearly two and a half years.

Each award category represents the achievements of individuals in different areas; the Achievement Award is for those who have excelled in their field or activity, including sports. The Community Award is given to anyone who has improved the quality of life for Melksham people; and the Enhancing Melksham Award is for anyone who has made an improvement to the physical environment in Melksham.

  • Outdoor education space opens at Melksham Oak

A new outdoor education space has opened at Melksham Oak Community School designed to give pupils meaningful opportunities to learn, grow and connect with nature.

The space will allow students access to a dedicated outdoor learning environment where they can take part in a range of activities including team-building challenges, environmental projects, bushcraft and practical life-skills development.

Staff involved in the project say the provision will play an important role in supporting students who benefit from practical and experiential learning approaches.

Associate Headteacher Mrs Clark, said, “Learning doesn’t only happen inside the classroom. This space will allow our pupils to explore, be curious, discover and grow – learning not only about the world around them but about themselves within it. We’re grateful to everyone who supported the project and helped make it possible. A special mention to Mr Lavery for his passion and dedication.”

  • Plans for additional 275 homes in Melksham East

Plans for 275 new homes on land east of Blackmore Farm have been shared, with residents encouraged to give their views.

The public consultation by Gleeson Land seeks feedback on plans for a mix of housing types and sizes, with 30% proposed as affordable properties. The consultation is being held ahead of a planning application being submitted.

The development is proposed to adjoin a scheme of 500 houses on land at Blackmore Farm, off Sandridge Common, which was approved by Wiltshire Council last year. It would also adjoin houses on Lopes Close and Blackmore House to the north, with access to the site proposed via a new T-junction from Sandridge Common.

  • Melksham resident’s travel challenge exposes accessibility barriers

A Melksham resident with a spinal cord injury has been part of a challenge to test the accessibility of public transport.

Chris Davis, who uses a wheelchair, was one of six people with spinal cord injuries from across the UK challenged to plan and complete a journey to central London within 48 hours, using at least two forms of public transport, including trains, buses or the tube.

Each participant was required to map their own route, navigate unexpected barriers and document their experience using video diaries and a detailed scorecard to assess accessibility at every stage.

The challenge was organised by the Spinal Injuries Association, of which Chris is a volunteer. He said, “Our message is that accessible travel can be challenging but it shouldn’t put you off from trying.”

  • Local lettings expert invites Melksham landlords to Renters’ Rights Act evening

With sweeping changes to rental legislation on the horizon, one Melksham property professional is stepping forward to help local landlords understand what lies ahead.

Alistair Saunders, Director of Blueleaf Property, has been managing rental homes across Melksham and the surrounding areas for more than 15 years. Over that time, he has built a reputation for giving clear, honest advice to landlords navigating an increasingly complex lettings landscape.

Now, with the upcoming Renters’ Rights Act set to reshape the private rental sector, Alistair believes landlords need practical guidance more than ever.

“The legislation coming through will represent one of the most significant changes the industry has seen in decades,” he explains. “Many landlords are hearing bits and pieces in the media but aren’t always sure what it actually means for them and their properties.”

The Renters’ Rights Act Landlord Information Evening takes place at The Kings Arms Hotel, Melksham, on Monday 16th March starting at 5:30pm and is a FREE to attend event.

  • Kieran Baggs returns as Melksham Town manager

Melksham Town Football Club have announced the return of former boss Kieran Baggs as First Team Manager, following the departure of Stuart Fleetwood last week.

Kieran previously led the club to promotion from the Western League back in 2018 and now returns to Melksham for a crucial end-of-season run-in. With just nine games remaining, Town currently sit 19th in the Southern League, in one of the relegation places, following a 3–2 home defeat to Brixham last weekend.

Kieran joins from Paulton Rovers who currently lie fourth in the Western League Premier Division, and will be joined by assistant manager Jamie Lyons and his backroom staff.

Speaking to Melksham News this week, Club Chairman Adam Young said Kieran had already had a big impact around the club. “His ability as a coach, as a manager, is exactly what we need at this stage of the season. We’ve got nine games left, 27 points to play for and I’m confident he can help us find the wins we need to stay in the Southern League.”

  • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town

A column celebrating all things Melksham from local resident Miriam Zaccarelli

Of all the travels and adventures I’ve had in my life, I always come back to where my heart feels happy and at home, in Melksham.

Our friendly and vibrant little town is full of incredible people and places and so many ways to feel enriched, connected, joyful and inspired. I will be celebrating Melksham with a little love letter every edition, highlighting something wonderful that makes me Love Melksham.

This week – because I actually took part! – features the remarkable Melksham parkrun. It is such a gift to Melksham that a team of enthusiastic volunteers show up every week in all weathers to make the event possible. It’s a free friendly 5k event, starting in King George Playing Field at 9am every Saturday, and everyone is welcome to run, jog or walk along with around 150 others. Volunteers and spectators are also always welcome! The route is currently gorgeous with cherry blossom and spring flowers and includes a beautiful stretch along the river and up to Murray Walk. Encouraged by cheerful marshals, lots of safety measures and a simple method of timekeeping, you can race up front with the super athletic runners or walk and chat leisurely with the friendly Tail Walkers at your own pace.
