THE next film screenings at Melksham Monday Movies are three movies with big name stars – Edie, Finding your Feet and Goodbye, Mr Chips.
On Monday 30th October, Edie (2017) is about an 83-year-old (Sheila Hancock) who packs an old camping bag and embarks on an adventure she never got to have – climbing Mount Suilven in Scotland.
Directed by Simon Hunter, it stars Sheila Hancock, Kevin Guthrie and Paul Brannigan.
On Monday 6th November, Finding Your Feet (2017) is about a middle class ‘judgemental’ snob who finds out her husband is having an affair with her best friend, on the eve of her retirement. She is forced into exile with her bohemian sister who lives on an impoverished inner-city council estate.
Directed by Richard Loncraine, it stars Imelda Staunton, Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall.
On Monday 20th November, Goodbye Mr Chips (2002), is about a Latin master, Mr. Chipping (Martin Clunes) of Brookfields boys boarding school, he is considered a good teacher and a kindly person and considered to be married to the job. However, on a walking holiday, he meets and marries Kathie, who becomes his helpmate at the school but sadly pre-deceases him.
Just before World War One, insensitive new headmaster Ralston tries to edge Mr. Chipping out but the boys rally and Sir John Rivers, an old pupil of Mr. Chippings and now head of the board of governors, invites him to stay and, when the war breaks out and Ralston joins up, Mr. Chipping becomes the new head.
He is saddened by the waste of young lives in the pointless war and also by the death of his old friend and former German teacher Max, who had returned to his homeland to fight for Germany and he reminds the assembled boys that an individual’s goodness is more important than their nationality.
Directed by Stuart Orme, it stars Martin Clunes, Victoria Hamilton and Conleth Hill.
Doors for all showings open at 1.30pm and the films start at 2pm. There is a break for tea or coffee and a chance to catch up with friends, before finishing around 4pm. Admission is by donation, with a suggestion of £4.
