A community boxing gym in the heart of Melksham is urgently searching for a new home.
The Contender Gym Melksham is a Community Interest Gym based at Avonside. Coaches say the gym provides discipline, confidence and a safe space for its members.
The gym is currently housed in a building that is being renovated and is due to be taken over by new owners.
A hike in rent means the facility will no longer be able to afford to use the space.
“The rent for the building will increase by four times the current cost,” said boxing coach and secretary of the gym, Tracy Steel.

“As a community interest gym, this is something we simply cannot afford. We are faced with an impossible choice: raise our prices and exclude the very people we exist to help—or find a new home.
“We refuse to price people out. We refuse to turn away children who need a safe and positive environment. We refuse to become something that only a few can afford.
“The boxing gym is about far more than punching bags and boxing gloves. It is a place of safety, discipline, confidence and hope. For many local children, young people and adults, it is a second home.
“We exist to serve the people of Melksham – not to make profit. Our prices are a fraction of what you would expect to pay for a standard gym membership or drop-in session. We do this because we know that many families simply cannot afford expensive gym fees and they shouldn’t have to miss out on something positive because of money.

“Despite our affordable prices, the quality of training we provide is exceptionally high. Our coaches are experienced, passionate and dedicated. We run children’s classes and youth sessions that give young people structure, routine and something to be proud of. For some, boxing builds confidence and self-belief. For others, it keeps them off the streets and gives them focus. And for a small but important number, it opens the door to becoming a professional athlete.
“Every day, we see the difference this gym makes. Shy children grow in confidence. Teenagers find discipline and purpose. Adults improve their mental health and wellbeing. Parents tell us how much calmer and happier their children are since joining. This gym changes lives.”
The gym is calling for anyone local to get in touch if they can help.
“Whether you are a landlord, a business owner, part of a local organisation, farm land, or simply someone who knows of a possible space – we would love to hear from you,” said Tracy.
The gym is seeking a new premises of around 2,500sqft. “We are happy to be leasing and paying an affordable rent where we can keep our fees really low for everyone,” said Tracy.
The gym can be contacted on 07971 730231 or ringside@live.co.uk
