THE War Memorial in Canon Square is to become a temporary focal point for the community to remember loved-ones who have died during the Covid-19 pandemic.
From this Sunday, 7th March, anyone wishing to remember someone can write the name of the person on a small cross and place it in the raised flowerbeds at the War Memorial.
Explaining the idea to Melksham News, Revd Alison Sowton said, “We were very aware as a parish that lots of people have lost loved ones, not just to Covid, although many have died of Covid, but also in the ordinary run of life, people have lost loved ones that they have not been able to be with, or been able to say goodbye to because of the restrictions on funerals.
“So we wanted the town to be able to mark that loss in a way that was going to be helpful to them. And we feel that the War Memorial will be a good place for people to come and do that. To maybe write the name of a loved one on a cross and for that to be a focus of love and prayers for our town for a period of time.
“The War Memorial is the heart of where the town ‘remembers’, so putting it there makes sense. It’s important that we have a space to remember as a town.”
A box with crosses, pens and antibacterial wipes will be placed at the War Memorial for people to use from this Sunday, 7th March.
The War Memorial’s flowerbeds will be available to use for remembering people who have died during the pandemic until it is time to prepare the War Memorial for Remembrance.
The idea was welcomed and supported by Melksham Town Council at a meeting last week.
