THE committee of Bowerhill Village Hall need a treasurer to join the team, as the existing treasurer resigns at the end of the month.
The hall is a community facility, run by a committee of 10 to 12 people, that hosts: baby and toddler groups; yoga; craft, coffee and chat; private parties; an NHS diabetes prevention clinic; Alzheimer’s support; Age UK fitness and friendship group; cubs; Melksham Free Dining; and church groups, plus more.
Chairman Mark Harris said, “We are really busy and are having to turn people away that want to hire the hall because we’re so full. We really need a new treasurer to step forward. What we are looking for is someone reliable, good with finance, book-keeping, and someone who is willing and able to put themselves out for a good cause. By joining the committee, the individual will get the satisfaction of helping to run a community facility that is really busy and supports the elderly and vulnerable in the community.
“I joined the committee in 2015, after seeing an advertisement in the Melksham News to say that if no-one stepped forward the hall would have to close. I live close to the hall and thought ‘I can’t let that happen!’ Eight years later, I am still here. We are not quite at the point of closure yet but we do need someone to step forward to help us.”
The committee added, “The banking is all online with Lloyds and requires two out of three signatories for payments. Most is by direct debit and our users all pay by bank transfer. We have two employed cleaners who are paid monthly. This is all done through QuickBooks and HMRC.
“All systems are in place and there will be a thorough handover from the retiring treasurer with ongoing support from the officers of the committee. We have bimonthly meetings when the treasurer gives a report on the balances in the bank. We have an annual general meeting when the accounts are prepared ready to be audited. We are a friendly community minded group, basic computer literacy and knowledge of accounting would be useful but not essential as full training will be given.”
