Could you go waste-free for February?

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is challenging the community to go waste-free for February.

The charity says, “What does waste-free living actually mean? It means avoiding unnecessary waste and reducing the need for a rubbish bin (but don’t panic, we don’t expect you to lose the bin just yet!) There are huge positive environmental impacts to producing less waste:

“Fewer resources are used as raw materials – water, oil, energy, land, etc.

“Less waste will be sent to landfill and incineration

“It sends a message to businesses; we don’t want your waste

“Councils will spend less on landfill tax (currently £91 per tonne).

“Wiltshire Wildlife Trust is challenging the community to reduce its waste; it is as simple as that! You can set your own limit; zero waste or a jam jar’s worth is not realistic for everyone but this challenge is a great opportunity to look at the rubbish you are producing and see what you can do to reduce it. Why not set yourself a goal to produce no more than one carrier bag’s worth of rubbish for the month, or one black sack, or a two-litre bottle’s worth?

“If watching your waste for a whole month isn’t possible, try it for a day, or a week or two.

“You don’t have to hide away and avoid the supermarket – you can use materials which can be re-used, recycled and composted, but anything that would usually end up in the bin must go in your February waste container (bag/sack/bottle/jam jar or match box)

“You will learn to get savvy with your shopping, recycling and everyday habits which can lead to some lasting changes.

“If you produce less waste during your Waste Free Feb challenge then you can honestly say you have had a positive impact on our planet.

“Need help? Once you have signed up you will receive our Guide to Waste Free Living with lots of guidance and tips. You will also receive emails prior, during and post-challenge with additional guidance, tips and waste-free competitions.

“We have set up a Facebook group to support everyone taking part in Waste Free Feb. This is a community where you can share tips and good finds, and it is also a place to ask for help.

“Have fun! Having fun with this challenge makes it a lot easier. Don’t stress ,and remember we are here to help. Keep us updated on your progress on Twitter @SlimbinsWilts or Face book @WasteFreeFeb / Sustainability@WiltsWildlife Trust using #WasteFreeFeb to share your journey.

“#WasteFreeFeb 2019 was a huge success with over 400 people taking part and 8 tonnes of rubbish kept out the bin! Join us to make 2020 even more waste free.

“Take on the Waste Free challenge and join us for Waste Free Feb.”

  • People with dementia find friends at local club

People living with dementia locally are invited to make new friends and find a sense of purpose at Mill Street Club.

The national award-winning day centre in Trowbridge is open four days a week, offering companionship and a wide range of stimulating activities for people affected by any type of dementia. Members come from the Melksham area, as well as Trowbridge and Bradford on Avon.

Joan Berrett, who has attended the club for two years, says it is the highlight of her week.

She said, “I like it here. I enjoy the company. We are quite lucky – there are no miserable people here. We care about each other. Why sit at home on your own? When I come here, I’ve got other people I can talk to who are my age, which is nice."

  • New consultant brings fresh inspiration to Berryfield Slimming World group

Berryfield in Melksham is welcoming a new face at its long-running Slimming World group – and she’s no stranger to the journey its members are on.

Local resident and business owner Jayne Hurd, who has been a Slimming World member since May 2016, has lost more than three stone and transformed her health and confidence. Now, after training at the Slimming World Academy in Derbyshire, she’s stepping up as the group’s new consultant, ready to inspire and support others towards their own weight loss success.

Jayne’s story is one of remarkable resilience. In 2012, she was diagnosed with cancer while raising her two young daughters as a single parent. “I was engulfed in the fear of not being around to see my beautiful girls grow up,” Jayne said. And coping through food, combined with the effects of treatment and steroids, caused her weight to spiral.

  • Resident ‘desperate’ to live life feels ‘trapped and stuck’ in healthcare system

A Melksham resident with a complex neurological disorder says she feels ‘trapped and stuck’ in the healthcare system after a series of failed referrals for medical support.

Natasha Ward, aged 18, has Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that affects how the brain and body communicate, causing problems with movement, sensation and thinking.

Since her diagnosis, Natasha says the NHS has not provided the care she needs.

“I feel trapped and stuck,” she said. “I need this help and I need to be able to live my life, but I can’t because I am not getting the care that is needed.

“I am being refused the care they say I need and I am being told that they cannot help me because I am too complex. Doctors say that every symptom I have is linked to FND but that isn’t the case. At the moment I have unknown gastro issues and have had them for years, but nobody can work out what’s going on and they won’t look deeper into it.”

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Gratitude of a Greyhound

We know Henry Sawtell (1860-1944) as the manager of the family-owned feather factory that was located on Broughton Road. But his name was better known nationally for his sideline of breeding and racing greyhounds, specifically the famous “Melksham” strain.

Melksham Tom was one of the greatest stud dogs in the country during the 1930s and was the sire of more track winners than any other greyhound.

I have a fondness for greyhounds (we have two), but I personally don’t agree with racing as a betting sport and so I’ve not written a lot about the Melksham line of racers. But I came across an article that I thought was sweet and particularly poignant since our home is located in a former veterinary surgery.

  • Local care home hosts Willy Wonka Garden Party for residents and wider community

A Melksham care home transformed its gardens into a scene from Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory last weekend, as residents, families and friends from the local community had an afternoon of music, sweet treats and summer sunshine.

Blenheim House, part of the Berkley Care Group, hosted the Willy Wonka Garden Party as the culmination of a week-long programme of chocolate-themed activities for residents.

In the days leading up to the celebration, residents took part in chocolate workshops, making their own truffles and handmade sweets, as well as decorating colourful displays to bring a sense of magic to the home.

A Melksham business with more than 70 years of history has entered a new era with the opening of its purpose-built showroom and workshops on Lysander Road, Bowerhill.

Nortree was first established in 1952 by two local men, Norman and Trevor. Combining their names to create “Nortree,” the pair set up shop at the Coach House of the Kings Arms in Melksham Market Place.
From the very beginning, their business was rooted in hard work, community spirit, and a shared vision to serve local motorists.

As the company grew, it relocated to Beanacre Road, where it proudly operated for around half a century. For generations of Melksham families, Nortree became a trusted name for quality vehicles, reliable servicing, and personal customer care.
