THERE is light at the end of the tunnel, say Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club, as plans to replace the pavilion have already begun following the fire earlier this month.
The club was devastated when a fire tore through the pavilion on Sunday 5th June leaving the immediate future of the club uncertain. But work has already begun to demolish the existing pavilion and temporary solutions are being looked at so home games can continue to be played.
Club chairman Gary Burns said, “At a recent meeting of the Melksham Health and Wellbeing team, we were advised that the council is now going to ‘re-phase the planning of the campus building project, with a view to building a new pavilion for the cricket club ready for the 2017 season. Thoughts and the design process for this will start in the coming weeks.”
In the last few weeks, the club has been faced with some challenges in regards to watering the grounds. The club put out an appeal and Leekes of Melksham and Travis Perkins in Melksham both came to the club’s aid with donations of a hose and attachments.
The club groundsman Tim Carpenter said, “Without these small but vital pieces of equipment our club cannot function, so we cannot thank you enough.”
Since the fire, via social media, the club has been overwhelmed with offers of help, not just from people and businesses in Melksham, but cricket clubs from all over Wiltshire and beyond including a donation from a major cricket kit supplier.
The club would like to thank the following; Leekes of Melksham, Travis Perkins, Melksham Town FC, Melksham Rugby Club, Canberra Youth Centre, Melksham Youth Partnership, Melksham resident (Amanda Little), Trowbridge CC, Winsley CC, Jordan Rose (Sportivate), Mongoose Cricket, The Kings Arms Hotel, John Collins (WiltSports) and Old Mill Accountancy.
The club will now look to hold fundraising events to raise funds to replace the lost equipment.
Gary continued, “So, all in all, despite the horrendous couple of weeks, there is light at the end of the tunnel.
“We will keep people informed on the progress being made, but it’s good news and we can look forward to a brighter future.”
