MELKSHAM Cricket Club will be hoping for a new lease of life this year as it gets ready for a new pavilion after the old building and around £6,000 worth of kit was burnt down in June.

The club, formerly known as Beanacre and Melksham Cricket Club, voted in the shorter name at a meeting in October,  and is expecting to have a new pavilion built by the end of summer.

Club chairman Gary Burns told Melksham News, “A design of the new replacement pavilion has been agreed between Wiltshire Council and Melksham Cricket Club.

“We have had a challenging year and are looking forward to an exciting year for the club; with new facilities we hope to attract players and young people into the sport.  This is great news for cricket in the town. The pavilion will be built on the footprint of the previous one at the Melksham House site. We expect the application for planning permission and the invite to tender process to take place early this year, with the plan to start building work late spring.

“We will continue to play our fixtures at Melksham House for the 2017 season, and the new pavilion should be complete by mid to late summer 2017.”

Get involved

The club’s training sessions are already up and running and it is holding free sessions for students at Melksham Oak school from 3pm to 4pm on January 24th and 31st; February 7th, 21st and 28th; and March 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th.

The Cricket Young Sessions with In2sport are back up and running from 4.45pm to 5.45pm on Fridays at the Canberra.

For more information about either sessions email debzstewart@yahoo.co.uk

Adult indoor nets sessions will start on 6th March at Melksham Oak school from 8pm until 9pm on Mondays. Players old and new are welcome and should register their interest with Rich Hemmings on rich-hemmings87@ hotmail.co.uk or 07807 334316.

Would you like to learn to be an Umpire? Coach? Coach support officer? Welfare officer? Scorer?  The England Cricket Board courses are due to be announced shortly for this year.  Anyone interested in taking a course, being involved in the club or volunteering should email club secretary Ed Skippings on edskippings@gmail.com.

Find out more about the club on the ‘Melksham Cricket Club’ Facebook page.
