A LOCAL environment group’s bid to buy a huge piece of land along the river Avon to protect it as green space, has been unsuccessful.
The Melksham Green Space community group made a bid for 28.5 acres of land in early February, aiming to create a sustainable habitat for wildlife and a recreational area for the local community and boost biodiversity. Despite the group having the funds ready to go, a member of the group was informed last Friday by the agents that a bid had been accepted from a rival bidder.
“We’re obviously massively disappointed,” said Nigel Benham, chairman of Melksham Green Space, “but this certainly isn’t the end of our hopes to acquire the land.
“Our vision is to create a green oasis for both wildlife and the community, contributing to the well-being and overall quality of life in Melksham.
“Unfortunately, we understand our bid has been unsuccessful, but we remain hopeful that the new owners will speak with us to continue our endeavour to enhance the quality of green space in our town.”
The land has been put up for sale by owners Goodyear Tires as part of the wider sale of the Cooper Avon land. Melksham Green Space was hoping to buy part of ‘Area B’, on the opposite side of the river to the factory site and which runs along the river Avon from King George V Park to the outskirts of Melksham.
“I am immensely proud of what we have achieved as a small group of dedicated people,” added Nigel. “We are currently unaware of the identity of the purchaser of Area B. However, the area is a dedicated flood plain and has flooded three times already this year, making it unsuitable for housing.
“Despite this setback, we remain committed to preserving and enhancing green areas within the community and will continue to explore purchasing options for the land and look for ways to enhance the area.
“Our campaign will certainly go on – watch this space!”
