  • Proposals for 250 homes across two sites in Bowerhill

Plans are being developed for 250 new homes across two separate sites in Bowerhill, both with proposed access from the A365 Bath Road.

One proposal, put forward by developer Hannick, includes 200 homes on land next to Melksham Oak Community School. The site, which covers approximately 11.44 acres, is allocated for housing in Wiltshire Council’s draft Local Plan and also includes land reserved for the school’s future expansion.

The developer is proposing a mix of housing types, with 30% designated as affordable housing, alongside green infrastructure and public open space.

A public consultation is currently underway, and earlier this week, residents were invited to view the plans at an exhibition held at Oakfield Stadium. The proposals can also be viewed online at www.bathroadmelksham.com, where comments can be submitted until Thursday 27th June.

  • Town’s food bank now registered with official charity status

Melksham’s food bank has officially become a registered charity and marked the milestone with a launch event earlier this month.

Now known as Melksham Foodbank and Lifeline CIO, the charity will continue to provide thousands of food parcels to residents in Melksham and surrounding villages.

Charity status means the organisation can now claim Gift Aid on donations, which the team says will have a ‘significant’ impact.

Local councillors, charity members and other dignitaries attended the launch event to learn more about the charity’s work.

  • Radioactive contamination found at former Christie Miller site

Radioactive contamination has been detected at the former Christie Miller site following an environmental survey of the area. Wiltshire Council confirmed last month that contractors at the former RAF Melksham base in Bowerhill “identified radiation dose rates that were slightly higher than the normal background dose rates expected in the UK.”

The council insists there is “no elevated risk to the general public,” but has applied to the Environment Agency to carry out further investigations.

The contamination was found at the former Christie Miller sports centre – an RAF hangar which has been demolished and is being redeveloped by Wiltshire Council as a depot for its highways operations. Contractors had already found asbestos as part of the demolition work.

The former RAF Melksham station was established in 1940 as a base for the RAF School of Instrument Training and, later, the RAF Armament School.

  • Plan to relocate Melksham’s Aldi store to former Countrywide Farmers site

Supermarket chain Aldi is planning to relocate its Melksham store from Beanacre Road to a new site near the Farmers Roundabout.

The proposed location is the former Countrywide Farmers PLC site, which has stood vacant since the company went into administration and closed the store in May 2018.

The retailer says the current store “no longer meets Aldi’s needs” and that the new site would provide “easy access to a high-quality, low-price retailer”.

Aldi has confirmed that current staff in Melksham would be retained, with additional jobs created for the community. The existing Beanacre Road store will remain open while plans for the new site are progressed.

An online public consultation has been launched for residents to view the proposals and share their feedback before it closes on 25th June.

  • Carnival Prince to donate 25 inches of hair for cancer charities

Melksham’s seven-year-old Carnival Prince is set to have 25 inches of his hair cut off on carnival day to support this year’s Carnival Queen fundraising campaign for cancer awareness.

Guy Newman, whose hair currently measures 29 inches, is raising money for CoppaFeel! – a youth-focused breast cancer charity – in honour of Carnival Queen Debbie Holman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and has been fundraising for the charity.

The haircut will take place on the morning of Melksham Carnival, Saturday 5th July, with local salon Libra Hair Studio carrying out the cut. Guy’s hair will also be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair due to cancer or other conditions.

  • Melksham defibrillator unavailable in emergency due to council registration error

A defibrillator outside Melksham’s fire station could not be used during a medical emergency earlier this year – because it wasn’t registered on the national system used by ambulance services to locate life-saving equipment. In February, a resident tried to access the defibrillator – which is managed by Melksham Town Council – following a serious medical incident involving a family member. However, when they called 999, South Western Ambulance Service was unable to locate the equipment.
