CURVES women’s fitness centre celebrated its tenth anniversary in Melksham this month, with a day filled with celebrations.
The ‘No Men No Mirrors’ gym celebrated ten years in Melksham on 9th May, and its owners have praised the success of the centre in Avonside Enterprise Park.
Co-owner Rosalind Ambler said, “The fact that a huge amount of our members have come through word of mouth speaks for itself. Curves is popular because it caters for all abilities.
“Many members would not dream of going to a more traditional gym, but once they have been brave enough to come through the door for the first time their apprehension disappears.
“The equipment is easy to use, the staff are friendly and helpful, there are plenty of laughs, and workouts only take 30 minutes. It is not difficult to fit a few sessions a week into even the busiest life.”
During the day of celebrations members won lucky dip prizes, healthy snacks and drinks were served, and there was a ceremonial cutting of the birthday cake.
Overseeing the events were two of Curves’ local success stories. Both manager Sue Armstrong and circuit coach Karen Potter started as gym members, and are now trained to help other women follow their example to get fitter and happier.
Sue was appointed manager in 2013 and under her guidance the club has gone from strength to strength.
Sue said, “When I joined I was 21lbs heavier than I am today, and had difficulty heaving myself up from the floor after playing with my grandchildren. I can honestly say Curves has changed my life for the better – after just a few months my son asked if I had found the fountain of youth. I feel years younger, and I just love being able to help other women do the same thing.”
Karen joined when, after suffering with whiplash, she was told by her physiotherapist to build muscle by joining a gym.
Not thinking she was the gym-joining type, Karen joined Curves. At the time Karen did not have the strength to lift a cup with her right hand, but she was able to toast Curves’ birthday by raising a glass with no trouble.
Anyone is welcome to visit the gym and try out some of the easy-to-use equipment and, as Sue and Karen have proved, joining Curves can change lives.
