LOCAL MP Michelle  Donelan hosted a visit from the Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, in his first visit to Melksham where he had lunch with the local Conservative Association.

The MP’s office said, “A visit by the Foreign Secretary is significant at any time of year, but the timing of this visit takes on a special significance as it comes just a day after he assisted the Prime Minister in successfully negotiating a new deal to leave the EU.

“Michelle has a very good working relationship with the Foreign Secretary and has previously raised a number of concerns and suggestions put forward by constituents with him. Melksham locals took the opportunity to speak to Dominic Raab in person about his work and experiences in one of the top cabinet posts.

“The Foreign Secretary was particularly impressed with the local enthusiasm for a deal and praised Michelle’s work as an MP to promote her constituent’s views on Brexit and other issues. Michelle was hugely encouraged by the Foreign Secretary’s optimism about Britain’s future partnerships with other nations and made it clear that she wants to focus of our new relationships to be around providing new jobs and opportunities for towns like Melksham.”

Michelle Donelan said, “Dominic Raab was very impressed with Melksham town and I was delighted to be able to talk to him about some of the local businesses and projects that rely on good relations with our partners around the world. I know that he shares my view that Britain’s global outlook should be focussed on building relations and partnerships with other countries in the interests of ordinary people up and down the UK, including Wiltshire.

“The event was also a great opportunity for Melksham residents to put their views across to the very top of government. All non-Conservative members are welcome at our events; please do email me to find out more at michelle@michelledonelan.com.”

  • Community figures honoured at Buckingham Palace garden parties

Melksham community figures have attended Buckingham Palace garden parties in recognition of their work.

Volunteers Jeanette and Mike Nash, and business coach and King’s Trust mentor Neil Stewart, were invited to separate events hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla in May.

Jeanette and Mike Nash, who run the Singin’ Group, attended on Tuesday 12th May after receiving a British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours List last year for services to the Melksham community.

Over the past 30 years, they have supported numerous local groups and raised thousands of pounds for charities.

The Mystery of Spero Lodge

What does Masonic Lodge No 6825 in Essex have to do with Melksham Hospital on Spa Road

The first was consecrated on 20th April 1949; the latter was declared open by the Marquess of Bath on 27th July 1938. Is this clue any help with the answer? No?

How about the name “Spero”, which in Latin means “I Hope”. Got the reference now?

Even if I help you with an answer, you’re still not going to get it.

They are both contained in Spero Lodge. Actually, that’s not quite true. The answer, unless someone very clever does know, is that I can find no relation except for the name “Spero” and even then, dear readers, you are probably still scratching your head.

Spero aliquem mihi dicere posse.

Translation: “I hope someone can tell me.”

  • Tributes paid to Melksham rugby player

Tributes have been shared for a long-standing player at Melksham Rugby Club who has died aged 42.

Phil Stone died suddenly on Wednesday 20th May. He had been a member of Melksham Rugby Club for 18 years and was described as a ‘multi-talented’ player, having a playing career spanning the 1st team through to coaching.

His children Gwion, 18, and Addien, 16, have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.

They said, “Our dad was a funny man. He lit up every room he walked into. His laugh could be heard from miles away and we still hear it as if he were still with us.

“We miss his sarcasm and his constant jokes. He always said what he wanted and was never afraid to say it loud and clear. He loved a crowd and attention and we want to be able to give him that one last time.”
