MELKSHAM Town Sound is to be available anywhere in Melksham as a free WiFi signal is to be available across the town which will allow listeners to tune in.
The service will be in place for early 2014 and it will be the first time it has been used by any radio station in Wiltshire.
The WiFi signal will mean anyone with a device such as a smartphone, laptop or tablet which can connect to a WiFi signal can listen for free anywhere in Melksham. The radius is expected to cover all of Melksham and Bowerhill with two antennas installed giving a WiFi radius of one mile per antenna. The two antennas are to be placed at Blackmore Road as this is geographically the most central point in Melksham which will cover the most houses and amenities. The other is to be fixed in Bowerhill at an undecided location.
The WiFi signal will only allow users to listen to Melksham Town Sound or to visit their website.
The project has been approved by Ofcom the regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries and it is hoped an exact launch date will be announced shortly.
Will Bridger from Melksham Town Sound said, “It’s great news that we will be the first radio station in Wiltshire to do this and we hope it will allow people to listen wherever they are and ultimately increase our listener figures. The project is on a trial period initially but could become a permanent fixture if it goes well and Ofcom approve.”
