Could you give an hour a week to make a difference in an older person’s life? Age UK has clients in and around Melksham waiting for a friendly visitor.
The Befriending Service helps tackle social isolation by linking older people with local volunteers who visit them regularly.
Ernie who is 89 said, “I live on my own. I haven’t got a car and can’t get around. Peter comes and visits me once a week on Monday morning for an hour. We talk about football and sport. I’ve got nobody to talk to so it breaks up the loneliness.”
Volunteer Coordinator , Corine Meier said, “Our volunteers really enjoy the contact too, and this can vary from a chat in the client’s home, a trip out for a coffee, or going along to a local community event: it just depends on the people involved, like any relationship. We provide training and ongoing support and pay for travel expenses.
