THE public phone box on Littlejohn Avenue is to be adopted by the town council and transformed into a colourful flower and plant display by the South West in Bloom Melksham team.
The offer to adopt the iconic red phone box has come from owners BT, as the phone box is no longer making a profit.
At the town council’s asset management committee meeting, Mayor cllr Adrienne Westbrook said, “We are not taking this phone box out of service – it no longer makes a profit and therefore they (BT) would like to get rid of it. A community group will take care of it, but it has to come via the town council.
“We will be legally liable for the structure – even though it’s being handed over to Bloom to plant.”
About the plans for the adopted phone box, cllr Kathy Iles and chair of South West in Bloom Melksham, said, “We are going to plant it up like the ones in Bath – remove the glass, shelve it up and have planters in it.”
