George Ward planning application to be discussed

THE planning application for 270 homes on the former George Ward site is to be discussed at upcoming Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council meetings.

Both councils will host meetings on Monday 5th January and both start at 7pm as they consider an application from Persimmon for 270 new homes.

The application was submitted to Wiltshire Council last month and includes space reserved for open spaces, three playing fields and a club house with parking.

The proposal has caused concern for locals who have contacted the Melksham News with their objections. Dunch Lane resident Tracey Currey said, “The 270 houses on the George Ward site is bad enough with all the traffic that this will generate going through the ridiculous set of lights servicing Asda, but now there is mention of another development in the vicinity. Also on the plans the playing fields seem to have been re-instated with the club house. I was under the impression that the rugby club had turned down this area due to flooding. Is this just a sweetener to get the plans passed then sock it to us with more houses on that site?

“I must point out I am not a nimby and whilst I do understand the need for housing I also understand that the infrastructure needs to be considered carefully, but I fear it will be build the houses and worry about it later when the surgeries, roads and schools are fit to bust if they weren’t already.”

Whilst Shaw resident Mark Ashkowski said, “I would hope many will agree the  George Ward development is poorly thought out, adding hundreds of homes on a flood plain to an area with limited local facilities, such as no local GP, an over-subscribed local school at Shaw, a main road (A365) which frequently floods and no effective secondary route into Melksham.”

Melksham has seen an influx of planning applications for homes recently with over 1,000 potentially to be built across the town.

To view the proposal visit Wiltshire Council’s planning application page on their website; the application number is 14/11295/REM

  • Park Yoga ends after another successful season

Park Yoga has officially ended for the season, after between 60 and 70 people gathered in the King George V Park each Sunday morning this summer to enjoy an hour of stretching, movement and relaxation together.

The free weekly sessions ran from 4th May until the final session on Sunday 14th September.

Yoga instructor Hannah Blueitt said, “It’s been really busy this year and the weather was on our side. I had some lovely feedback and the sessions have built a really nice community together.”

This year’s sessions followed the first successful season last year. Hannah said, “It was nice to see lots of familiar faces this year but we’ve also had so many new people join this year too. There have been people who started it and have been there every week; there were a few people who had only missed one session, it was really nice.”

  • Newly planted walnut tree celebrates international links

A special walnut tree has been planted in the King George V Park by Melksham Town Council as part of a European tree-planting initiative.

The Baum Challenge sees towns nominate each other to plant trees. Melksham was nominated to take part in the challenge by Bradford-on-Avon, which had been nominated by Trowbridge after the town was put forward by its German twin town, Leer.

Each tree planted represents a town’s commitment to the environment and its willingness to collaborate across borders.

Before the screening of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in the park on Saturday 13th September, Melksham’s Mayor Saffi Rabey and Deputy Mayor Jennie Westbrook planted a walnut tree, donated by Dick Lovett BMW and MINI Melksham.

  • Successful fete raises valuable funds for school

A school fete brought together families and residents earlier this month for fun activities and refreshments, raising funds for Forest and Sandridge Primary School.

Held on Saturday 13th September at the school, the event was organised by the Parent Teacher Association, Forest Friends, and featured children’s games, fairground rides, glitter tattoos, a braid bar, a Stitch meet-and-greet, a tombola, and refreshments from local vendors including Roc and Floss Coffee and Evie’s Mac and Cheese.

Deputy headteacher James Mead said, “We are incredibly grateful to all the parents, the local community and especially our amazing PTA, Forest Friends, for their hard work in organising and running the event. Their support and generosity helped raise valuable funds that will go directly towards enhancing the school experience for our children at Forest.”

  • Former mayor to contest Melksham South by-election

A forner mayor will go head-to-head with a previous Wiltshire Council election candidate in the upcoming Melksham South town council by-election.

The election follows the resignation of Jon Hubbard in July, who had served on the council for 17 years. The vote is scheduled to take place on Thursday 9th October.

Tom Price, representing the Local Conservatives, served as the council’s mayor last year and was a town councillor for four years before choosing not to stand for re-election.

Challenging him is Jon Leach of Reform UK, who unsuccessfully stood for election to Wiltshire Council in May.

Both parties are regarded as right of centre, meaning residents will not have a choice of candidates from other parts of the political spectrum in this election. This is the first time in Melksham that these two parties have directly gone head-to-head without other parties standing.

  • RAF Melksham display at the town hall museum

This month’s display at Melksham’s ‘pop-up’ museum in the town hall commemorates the 85th anniversary of RAF Melksham.

The display has been installed by Melksham District and Historical Association, which is encouraging people to pop in and learn more about Melksham’s air force heritage.

RAF Melksham was a Royal Air Force station which operated as a non-flying training base. It was established in 1940 and closed in 1965.

It also trained personnel from other Allied Air Forces and the Royal Naval Air Service. After its closure, the site was developed into the Bowerhill Industrial Estate and residential area.

A selection of photos from the time are displayed, as well as a panoramic image of the site.

  • Family of late Melksham woman fight for justice over police ‘failings’

The family of popular Melksham woman Gail Chilcott, who died last year in a three-car collision, say they are fighting for justice after what they describe as failings by Wiltshire Police in handling the investigation.

Gail, who was a magistrate, fostered around 60 children with her husband, Maurice, and was known in the town for her childminding work and involvement in many community groups and activities.

She was involved in a collision on the A3102 near Calne last February and died on 26th March 2024 from her injuries.

Wiltshire Police launched an investigation into the collision, but for months the family received little information. They recently learned from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) that the case had been archived because the police had not provided the necessary information.

  • Sextortion awareness campaign launched in Melksham

A new campaign to raise awareness of ‘sextortion’ – online sexual extortion – has been launched in Melksham. It’s run by Crimestoppers, the independent charity, and its youth service Fearless, and has been made possible thanks to funding from Melksham Without Parish Council.

Sextortion – also known as online sexual extortion – is a cruel form of blackmail where victims are threatened with the release of intimate images unless they pay money or meet demands.

These images may be real or fake, often obtained through social media, dating apps or other online platforms. Victims can be targeted by strangers, fake romantic interests or organised criminal gangs. Cases are rising nationally, and Melksham is not immune.

“Sextortion can happen to anyone,” said Crimestoppers. “Victims often feel scared or ashamed. It’s important to remember don’t panic, don’t pay, and don’t stay silent. Help is available, and speaking up can protect others."
