A Melksham resident has achieved a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, independently undertaking challenges to build confidence and resilience.
Elisha-Kate Hargreaves, 20, has been working on the programme since the age of 16 when she was a student at Melksham Oak Community School, where she achieved a bronze and silver award.
In a milestone moment, she attended Buckingham Palace last month to receive her gold award from the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward.

She said, “I am really proud to have completed it with lots of additional challenges. It felt very special being at the palace and seeing everyone celebrate their achievements.”
The Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award is the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s programme, which sees young people aged 14 to 24 complete activities to overcome obstacles and set their minds to personal challenges.
By working for her award, Elisha-Kate has overcome fears including completing a skydive in Australia, where she went on a solo excursion for six weeks. She also undertook a four-day expedition in the Brecon Beacons, equating to 100 km hiking with camping.

Her trip to Buckingham Palace to collect her award was made even more special, as Elisha-Kate also had the opportunity to meet some of the special guests attending the event, including TV personality Sam Thompson and English choirmaster Gareth Malone, who were giving talks during the day.
Her mum, Donna-Kate, said, “It was a truly memorable day, spent in the beautiful palace gardens alongside other award recipients and their families. We are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished.”
