The ancient yew tree at the back of Gompels Pharmacy in Bank Street, Melksham, was experiencing problems due to all the buildings now surrounding it.
Nick Gompels saw it as another opportunity for change and trimmed it back to a totem pole.
He explained, “The vision was to create a giant topiary at the top of what used to be a large tree. The initial savaged image did not inspire anyone and most just laughed.
“Now, after seven years of patient pruning, the “Giant Riser Recliner Chair” no longer needs imagination and would happily seat a small family!
“Gompels is planning an illuminated version for Santa to sit in at Christmas.
“However, its baby brother, the very eco-friendly green mobility scooter, U-scoot (right) still needs a little imagination! Indeed one customer walking past the pruning quipped, “I can see what you mean with the top one mate, but not that one, not in my life time anyway”!
“Well, watch this space to see if the U-Scoot idea takes root.”
