TWO shoppers who stepped forward to help a couple on their supermarket shop have revealed themselves, but wish to remain anonymous.
An appeal went out in the last edition of Melksham News from members of the Talking Newspaper team, to find the good Samaritans. They explained that a couple, Mr & Mrs H, who are regular listeners of the local Talking Newspaper, faced a difficult problem whilst shopping in Lidl in Melksham. Whilst trying to withdraw money from the supermarket’s cashpoint, their bank card was withheld.
Two women who were also shopping at the same time, overheard the couple’s exchange with a member of staff and offered to step in and help by paying their shopping bill of £38. A very grateful Mr & Mrs H wanted to find their good Samaritans to repay their debt.
Following the appeal in Melksham News, the two women got in touch with Brian Heath of the Talking Newspaper team. He explained, “This generous couple were adamant that they did not want any publicity, nor did they want Mr & Mrs H to repay the cost of the shopping. They said they had only phoned me to make sure that the H’s did not give any money to anyone else claiming to have paid their bill!
“I assured them that I would not name them, but that I would ensure that both Mr & Mrs H and the Melksham News were informed that they had come forward. Apart from that, all I could do was to thank them most sincerely on behalf of Mr & Mrs H and indeed the whole community for their great kindness in helping complete strangers in what was a very upsetting situation.
“I’m sure your readers (and my listeners) will be pleased to know that I, at least, now know who this very kind and generous couple are, and that such acts of kindness do still happen in these strange times.”
