MELKSHAM residents everywhere are being asked to help clear the town and surrounding villages of litter as part of the national campaign, the Great British Spring Clean.
For the annual event Melksham Town Council will be holding its regular monthly ‘town tidy’ day on Sunday 7th April and is encouraging local groups to host their own ‘tidy days’ between Saturday 23rd March to Sunday 7th April.
Community engagement officer for the town council, Debbie Bentley says, “Anyone can take part. You can take part as a group or as an individual. We already have lots of ‘litter heroes’ in the town, who help keep areas clean, but this event is a great opportunity to encourage anyone else who would like to clear areas near to their own homes or parks nearby.
“Already local schools, including Forest & Sandridge, The Manor and Rivermead, are making plans to join in with litter picks during the school day.
“Any local groups that would like to hold a litter pick need to contact me as soon as possible to arrange to borrow litter picking equipment.”
About future ‘town tidy’ days, Debbie says, “Moving forward the town tidy scheme run by Melksham Town Council will be looking to create monthly initiatives focusing on specific issues or areas. People will be welcome to join in and any suggestions can be sent via the Town Hall.
“Melksham Town Council still offers community volunteering vouchers for their ‘town tidy’ events, and these can be redeemed at certain Assembly Hall events, particularly films which are great for all the family.”

In Bowerhill, the Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG) will be hosting a clean-up as part of the campaign.
The group says, “This clean-up will be held on Saturday 23rd March when we will meet at Blenheim Park on the green opposite Tesco Express at 2pm. BRAG has litter pickers that volunteers can borrow, and some bags, if they have not got their own. We ask that volunteers wear suitable clothing and footwear, and gloves are very useful. We will collect litter for a maximum of 2 hours, but any time spent will be appreciated. We have made arrangements to dispose of litter collected, so hope many volunteers can join us.
On Saturday 13th April, a clean-up will be held at Melksham Railway Station from 10am to 12pm. Organisers say, “The Melksham station area is in need of a good clean up and we wish to work with the community to make a positive difference to the litter problem.”
