LOCAL charity, Melksham Link, is appealing for volunteer drivers to continue its vital service, helping vulnerable residents attend medical appointments.
The charity, which is run by a team of dedicated volunteers says, “We take clients to their medical appointments when they have no family members, friends or neighbours who can take them.
“Whoever is reading this may need our services one day, or if you have someone close to you who you can’t help, they may rely on our friendly, helpful volunteers to get them the transport they need.
“If you could spare just a couple of hours (mainly during weekdays), or more to join our team, it would help this vital service to keep running.
“Sometimes, we have to reluctantly tell clients we don’t have a driver available to take them. This means they have no one and would have to cancel vital surgery or get a very expensive taxi.
“Many of our clients would be too vulnerable to negotiate the bus journey, particularly when they are unsure how long their appointment may take.
“Our drivers pick up clients from their home, take them to hospital, dentist, optician etc, wait, then return them to their front door. It’s a voluntary role, but we pay 45p per mile for each journey.”
