A NEW hydrotherapy and grooming centre has opened in Melksham to help cats, dogs and other small animals on their journey to recovery following diagnosis, surgery or traumatic injury.
Woozelbears was set up in 2010 to provide a top rehabilitation service throughout the UK, with other centres in Swindon, Witney, and West Sussex. The centre, in Forest Road, Melksham, can treat conditions such as arthritis, hip/elbow dysplasia, spinal injuries, injuries due to trauma and obesity.
The treatment facilities boasts a pool measuring 6mx3m, big enough for the biggest of breeds, and includes an extended length aquatic treadmill and underwater cameras.
Woozlebears say, “Hydrotherapy in the pool allows for completely non weight bearing exercise which is ideal for dogs with conditions like osteoarthritis as it takes all pressure off the joint and the temperature of the water, 30 degrees, helps to reduce inflammation within the joint.”
As well as rehabilitation, the pool is also home to feline only clinics, puppy swimming classes and sports conditioning programmes.
On site there is also a grooming parlour where you can treat your dog to the ultimate pamper experience, catering for any size and breed of dog.
Sarah Bussey, a level 3 qualified hydrotherapist has spent the last year training with Woozlebears in order to open her own centre here in Melksham.
She said, “I’ve always been an animal lover. When I was younger I had a border collie and lots of cats, now I have a rough collie, lots of cats and ferrets!
“My main background was working with young people such as young offenders or young people in care but I have always volunteered in the animal sector and decide to make a big career change.
“It’s exciting to be opening a centre in Melksham but it has been a long journey! I’m looking forward to opening as I have been getting some great feedback already from the community and several local vet practices are pleased to see such a facility in the area that openly welcomes both cats and dogs.
“Here at Woozlebears, we are hoping to continue to improve the industry and move it in a professional and clinical direction.”
The service can be used via referral from your vet or you can approach the centre directly. Woozlebears are members of the Canine Hydrotherapy Association, so the costs can be covered by pet insurance.
The centre also has a boutique, where you can purchase collars, leads, harnesses, care products and more.
Woozelbears is hosting an open day on Saturday 1st December from 12-4pm where visitors can view the facilities and find out more about its services. Sarah will be on hand to answer any questions.
